My allis chalmers 7040 seems to have a fuel problem. It starts, then dies out. I replaced the fuel filter and still no luck.My question is,if the fuel filter drain plug is opened and no fuel is present(after priming pump plunger )would it most likely be air in the lines or maybe blow out the lines from the filter to the tank. After setting for a while it wants to start(smoke from exaust)then after 30 seconds no fuel vapor is present. Thanks Dan

I don't have the patience to type out ALL the details tonight, but do some 'net research on "Roosa Master failed governor ring coffee grounds".

(When the plastic governor damper ring in the Roosa Master (Stanadyne) injection pump fails, it breaks down into what looks like black "coffee grounds", and plugs the imjection pump's fuel return fitting/housiing pressure regulating valve, which results in the engine shutting down just a few seconds after startup... a COMMON problem.)

I don't know if you Allis has any old rubber fuel lines, but those rubber lines collapse inside and pinch off the supply when they get old. If you allow the tractor to sit for awhile, some fuel still gets through the line, so you can start it up, and it'll run until it burns that fuel up and then it can't get any more. Yep, been through that before, and my tractor had mostly metal fuel lines, but it had short pieces of rubber lines around the fuel filters, and 1 of them caused the problem.
Hope this helps,
