I don't know why I just now realized this but I sure am blessed. My parents quit farming about 12 years ago and I have been renting 40 acres back from them for the past 7 years to "hobby farm". We do all the farming with the old stuff and leave the bigger stuff in the shed. But last night was just awesome for me! I was out picking corn, with my JD 730 and 2 row NI (which is my absolute favorite!) and my girlfriend showed up and brought me supper and took "her spot" on the fender for the rest of the night. My Dad, who just worked 10 hours at a machine shop, rushes home to haul loads in with his dad's original Oliver 77 that was bought new. The corn yeilds are so good that I have to stop every now and again to let the picker empty out the hopper so it doesn't over flow. All this is happeing under the most perfect, cool, crisp fall sky. Wow, what more could a guy ask for!!I think the part I really think about the most, is that Dad is not going to be around here for ever and I really love the fact that we can still farm together!

Sounds like you are enjoying life. Hang on to that girl, don't let her fall off of that fender. Some of my good memories with Dad, were when he was farming. Dad and Mom are both gone now, but the memories are still with me, and still have his old tractors. Stan

Those days are past for me,but I knew it when I had it and appreciated it. Dad was still alive and here helping out,my boys were in high school and working with us. Everybody had their health. Not that I don't still appreciate what I have now,but you just know when you're at that perfect place in life.

My wife grew up on a farm just like I did and she told me that she is to smart to get on a tractor now because if she does I won't let her off. She's a little smarter than I am.

Anyway I hope that you marry that girl they are rare and hard to find now-a-days.

Walt

My neighbor and close friend is 4 months younger than I am so I have been teaching him how to run the equipment for haying. Its nice to be able to teach someone how to do something on the farm.

Now that I am older I appreciate and get along with my Dad better than ever. Just the other day after seeing my son and I driving one of our old Oliver's he remarked that he he was "richer" than any farmer in the county. I enjoy the time with Dad, I too know it won't last forever.

Sounds to me like you are one of the luckiest people in the world. My Dad is semiretired from farming and I farm their ground in the close area. He still works up ground in the spring and hauls in teh fall. I will really miss him when he's gone. I have seen a lot of father/son pairs that farm together but fight in the process and some others who get along real well. I farm as a major source of income but with older stuff also, M2 Gleaner/2290 and 2294 Cases etc.

Only thing I'm missing is the girlfriend to bring lunch and ride with!!

Moments like you described make all of life's little struggles worth it all doesn't it!! Sounds like you got to step back 50 years in time. I'm not even close to 50 yet, but sure sounds like the days I would have loved to live in.

Sounds like a great evening! Awhile back I finally decided that fall was my favorite season. They all have their perks, but there's nothing like harvest. Whereabouts in IL are you?

Alrighty. I'm about an hour south of you near a town called Dixon right on I-88. 730Virgil on the forum here isn't too far from you, he's a ways to your west. Oh by the way, does your girlfriend have any sisters? ; )

I've got an aunt and uncle on my dad's side down around Ottawa. Can't really tell you what direction though. Only get down there a 2 or 3 times a year.

Hi J.C.in AZ.;

My brother-in-law is from Ottawa. His name is Neil Helmers, he will be 70 in Jan. He had a sister. They lived north of town. Place was sold and houses built on it.

Thanks. Charley.

Savor every moment of what you have. I farmed with my Dad and Grandfather for a few years, and for a brief time, with my Dad and my Son. Those times remain among the best of my life. There is never any expiration date on the good memories!

Sounds like your living the life. Keeping it simple. Sounds like you have a gewm for a girlfreind, they are kinda rare like that, my wife is an old fashioned farm girl as well, there something to be said for women that learned to live the way their granmothers and great grandmothers did. You should have had her take a pick, a JD 730 picking corn in the fall, thats a screen saver!

We did the exact same thing for a lot of years. In our case it was my dad 68, me 43 and my oldest son who started helping us when he was 10. So it was the three of us and then four when my youngest son was old enough. My dad has been gone 4 years now, but those were some of the best times.

Enjoy while you can and savor every moment.

I live in Boone County as well, and help a buddy farm 2500 acres in Cherry Valley. Its a small world! Weather has been great the last few days! Only 750 acres of corn left. Things are moving nicely!
