I got the beans done Oct. 7.

Started right in on corn and got the down corn done.

Been very little movement of combines around here since Sat. cause of the rain.

Did a little yesterday and hope to get more today before the rain tomorrow.

Any movement in your area?

Gary

Extreme northern IN here, we are about 1/2 done with our corn (900 total acres) and I am almost 1/3 done with the beans (800 total) and it seems that is the story with most the other local farmers too. Been raining every couple days so we only get 1 maybe two days of good cutting weather. Corn has been coming off at 15-18% which is drier than normal and the yield is running 160's with a usual average of 130's... all dryland. Beans have been running 55-60 with an average of 35! Looks to be a decent year if we get it all in. Nasty storm coming our way tonight. Oh, two days ago dad decided to take the combine swimming! Three large 2wd Case's moved it 2 foot forward and 4 foot down. Deciced to call buddy with excavator as it was raining then next morning... took about 1/2 hour to get out and to higher ground. Had the camera but couldn't take pictures due to the pouring rain (didn't want wife upset if camera got wet or dropped in muck) and I had to stand and communicate with both operators. Man does a Hitachi 160 have a lot of pull! Oh, I heard that some counties can't sell any corn due to the toxins is that true. Think it was over in IA. Just curious.

Hey in-too- deep where are you abouts? Here in N. IL (around garden prairie, marengo) beans are mostly out except for second plantings, and some of them have a long way to go. Corn is comign but been slow lately due to the weather.

These rains just won"t stop!

We managed to get some beans done--enough to fill available storage, but there"s still about 1/3 the field still standing on each farm.

Corn has not been touched on our farms. But the neighbors have cut off end rows some places. Corn"s all plenty dry, but the ground is too soft to run a combine across it.

Looks like we"re gonna haveta take the risk and run in the dark just as soon as the ground starts freezing at night. Hopefully then we will be able to get across all those wet spots!

Hello folks,
I don't post much here but do lurk quite a bit. Thought this would be a good place to jump in.
Corn here in North east Arkansas has been gone for a while, Most run 200 or better. Rice is mostly done 15-20 bu better than normal. Soybeans are about 80% done yields all over the place. Dryland just ground to cover to good irrigated 70 or better. Probably average 45-50. Harold

N. Illinois. All of boss's beans are out, and little under half done with corn. The local elevators are filling up or already full, so it's going to be a long fall trying to keep the corn away from the combines. Watched a lot of beans go 60 bu./acre and most of the corn is 200 with some down to 160 and some up to 220. I think I might get a Christmas bonus this year.

The only people that aren't done here either farm too much or had equipment problems. Top end yields in corn and beans. Wheat is in and up and looks great.

Dad finished the wheat harvest in ND about a month ago. Was decent, but not a record harvest. Contracted a bunch before the price went up, so lost a few bucks there, too.

Overall, a good year. :o)

He did, that"s why there was about 18,000 bushels in a pile on the ground. No room at the elevator, either.

Hey Steven, What kind of loss will he take with the grain stored in the open like that?

Anyone got any pictures of beans? I'm trying to figure out what a local crop is. It's something they don't normally grow here. Has a burnt red seed pod about 6" or so with a corn type of leaf, about 3ft tall. S. AZ crop

It rained on it three inches over a period of about a month, figures he lost about 15 bushels of it. Cheaper than buying a grain bin!

So then how long will grain last stored like that fit for human consumtion?

For animals?

There's got to be a draw back to open grain storage or everyone would be storing it this way.

The longer it sits, the more the bottom of the pile will rot and sprout and/or turn to manure.

The outer layer of the pile will bleach in the sun, and the bugs will get to it as well.

I would say a month is about as long as you would want to have it sit there.

In ND and SD I"ve seen many elevators pile grain on the ground, wheat and corn, waiting for trains to come so it can be hauled away.

In central Illinois almost everything is out and in the bins. Most of the ground that is not no-till has been chisel plowed. Now we have had rain, and it is still warm and the fields are all green again, just like it is spring time again. It looks like a lot of corn went out the back of the combine this year. Never have seen ground this green in the fall, my dad is 73 years old and even he commented he has never seen this much corn regrowing in the fall. Figures he probably lost $5-$10 an acre on his ground and his is not as bad as some of the others around our area.

We've been done since last saturday. Seemed kinda funny getting corn done first. I know what you mean about the corn gowing out in the fields. I was kidding my neighbor about trying to double crop his corn!

Don't have any beans,I only raise what I feed to the cattle. About two more days will finish up the corn. Not even going to try today. I pick all of mine and crib it. The picker tends to crush and shell real bad if the stalks are wet and after yesterdays rain,I'm not even going to try today. Looks like rain off and on for the next week. Just hope the wind doesn't take it down. Forecast says windy for the next three days.

Yep,

There's an old saying. Feed what ya raise and raise what ya feed. Seems to work well for lots of guys and helps take away the 'gamble" of the thing.

NW Iowa. Our own beans are done but not much progress on corn, maybe 10% done. There are lots of beans still in the field in this area. Last Fri. and Sat. we parked the four wheel drive tractor at the end of the field so it would be handy when a combine or cart got stuck. We used it several times.

Corn moisture is running 15% to 19.5%. Yeilds are vary variable depending on where the scarce rain fell in july. Second year corn is doing from 100 to 200 bu. Corn on beans seems to be in the 150 range. Bean yeilds have been all over the board, from 40 to 65 bu depending where the rain hit and if the aphids were heavy or not.

We have had rain since Sunday and the forecast is for rain the rest of the week. Possibly two inches today.

We have had a lot of cars running into tractors and wagons this year and I don't know why.Jim

Not good in southern Mn. either. Got the beans out, and about 1/3 done with the corn. Just to much rain and not enough tile for this fall. Nothing moving at all around here. Still lots of beans in the fields and know some folks who haven't started the beans yet. Sure is funny to see the volunteer corn and beans growing in the fields after it has been harvested, haven't seen this happen in 40 yrs. of farming.

Pray for dry weather till Thanksgiving!

Got about 300 acres of beans and 700 acres of corn left but we've been getting real light showers about every 3-4 days which don't amount to much but shut us down for half a day to a day each time. Bean yields have been 55-60 bpa so far which is all but unheard of in this area and corn yields are well above average for the most part. If the weather would cooperate we could be done by the end of the month and I've got to say that I'm ready for things to start slowing down at the end of the year.

got the corn out about a month ago, average of 191 bu/acre, came out 15.1-19% moisture. beans got done 2 weeks ago did pretty good even with a few patches of sudden death, 64 bu/acre average. came out 14% moisture. bins are all full, fans are a running. had lime spread on the corn ground, gotta get everything chiseled under. pumpkins didnt do good this year, lot of little ones, still have some that are still green. some vines still have blossoms with a couple league ball size pumpkins. goofy year for them.

Done with beans--made 59 to 66. Treated seed, then treated w foliar fert, sugar, and fungicide. 10 bu better than average.
40% done with corn-- 650A to go. Yields have been from 165( 40A c/c with Rootworn hybrid failure) to 215. Most right at 205 dry but a little wet--still around 18%. Had 4 dryer bins all "cooking" at the same time this weekend. Will be our best harvest ever--if we ever get done. 175 is normal here, but last few years have been more like 190. 2" rain here since Sat--Predicting "locally heavy" rains this evening. Good morning Gary. Well got about 15-20 acres of soybeans to go and about 160 acres of corn to do...Waiting to get back on the beans as it rained yesterday. A good day would take care of them. I'd say it'll take us 2 to 3 weeks to get the corn done with our setup.

Hey Gary,

If ya get a minute, could ya drop off about 1500 bushel of corn at my place? I sure could use the feed. :>)

Boy! I hate the thought of actually having to "buy" corn. Just seems "un-natural" or something. :>(
