Okay,

Before I go buy this 2X6 lumber to lift the sides up a bit.

Would 375 bushel of wheat on a 26K GVW truck be overloaded? Do I really "have" to play by the rules? :>)

Allan

I have two trucks, one's a 14' grain box 72 GMC 5500 with a sill plate tag GCWR of 17500. I run a wieght of 28000 or 350 bu all the time with no trouble. The build sticker in the glove box says it has 26000 lb rear overload springs factory installed. The other one is a C65 16 ft. with a GCWR of 24500. On that one I run 32000 to 34000 lbs or 375 to 400 Bu all the time with no troubles. Oh by the way I travel on gravel roads only. The Dot bears don't want to get the Expeditions dirty, they stay on the main state roads. The old trucks were way over built and overloading was expected by the engineers of the time so your only deterent to proper loading is the dot gestopo goons.

I asked my class in Communications. they determined that if your truck empty weighs more than 7000 lbs, it will be overloaded. JimN

I've got a '75 Dodge, single axle, 18' box. I run 400 bu. all the time and never had a problem, elevator is about 8 miles. My custom cutters sometimes get to 110,000 and I can't remeber that they've ever been pulled over.

How's the wheat lookin'. Mine is up and lookin' good.

18' on a single axle? Geeze Henry!

Wheats up; lookin'..... ..... .well, can't think of a word for it right now. :>( Spotty best describes it.

If it doesn't rain pretty darned soon, I'm wastin' my time on this old truck.

Wheats a pretty amazing plant-kinda like the Timex watch. If you get a little rain this weekend a lot of it will still germinate. Betcha you'll be surprised this coming spring.

Now Allan, you and I both know you haven't gotten this far by playing by the rules! Of course you don't have to follow them and as long as you don't get caught you will have no problems. Now here is what I think, going overweight isn't much of a problem as long as you aren't too far over. Who says the max GVW is 26k? Is that what the truck tag says? That is possible but the DOT allows 20k on a single drive axle and 12k on a steer assuming the tires can handle the weight and the brakes are designed to stop that much. So you may possibly gross out at 32k + 10% overage as long as it has farm plates and you don't drive on an interstate and it is still in your possession. So now your max GVW is 35,200. I assume your net weight is about 15k and 375 bu. of wheat weighs 22,500. The truck and wheat together gross at 37,500. A bit over but not bad unless your trucks GVW is 26k then that is excessive. You need to find yourself a nice tandem.

People never worriy much about what they do, it is what they get caught doing that worries them.
In Georgia the way the state D.O. T. cowboys feel determines what the harassment and fine is. If they had a bad day or if it is Monday morning they may harass everyone even for slight overloads. Worked in the mining industry for 30+ years and we have had them nail our over the road hauling trucks for 500lb overload.

I know. Farm sale took the last one I had. :>(

Going out to get the truck now; pretty sure the gross on the tag said 26K. 9 something on the front and 16 or so on the rears? Its a C-65 anyhoo.

I'm just worried for those DOT boys. Don't wanna make 'em have to leave their coffee cups 'er nothin'. :>)

If she's a C-65 I'll bet the rear axle is at least 18,000#.
