The Allis Chalmers 190XT is turning out to be a deep can of worms. When i bought it I test drove it, each gear, on and off the throttle, didn't jump out of gear, no noises, everything worked, 3 point, engine sounded good, smoked alittle but was smooth. I got it home and ran it around some and guess what, it jumped out of gear. I have it completely torn down now, every nut and bolt, found one inch deep muck in the trans/diff., chipped teeth on all the gears but the countershaft gears, the mainshaft is worn down where the gears sit on it, the gears wobble some. I figured $3,000 in the budget for the trans fix but now it's turning out to be around $5,000. Then the clutch, engine, etc.etc. I was thinking about changing my name to "In Too Deep" but there's already a guy on here with that name. I'm finished crying, and no I don't feel any better. lol. At least I'll end up with a new tractor

Most expensive equipment and vehicles I've ever owned and operated were used. That's just figuring parts, not including lost production,my time or machine shop bills. It's either new when the dealer is running a discount. Or something off a lease/rental that's 1-2 years old and still has warranty.

sometimes ya win-and sometimes ya just PAY$$$$$$$ in reply to Big Hunter, 10-10-2007 12:27:56
I know it sucks but sometimes its cheaper to cut your losses and just go buy another one and salvage out what you can on the other one or use what parts you can for your next endeavor.

I know the feeling. A few years back My brother and I bought a JD 5020. Worked ok when we tested it. Put it to work, the clutch shaft seal started leaking, after about 5 gal a day figuted it was time to split the beast, Next year the rear axel pulled out of the final drive. Now we just had the injuction rebuilt. Have fun. Stan

I think that XT190 was a good tractor. You just got one that was abused. My Dad had an XT190 Gas that he traded for a new 1130 Massey. He liked the Massey but always wished he'd kept the XT190. Said it was a nicer tractor to drive.I agree you need to find a parts tractor. They made quite a few XT190's. Bet if you look around a little you can find one cheap. They don't bring much when they don't run unless they are super rare. Good luck with it.

I feel for ya,my bottomless pit was a 1955 70 gas John Deere.I found it sitting a barn stuck but was told when it sat outside it wasn't long till they moved it inside.I was very confident with a little penetrating oil and a long bar on the flywheel it was gonna be a steal and I would be the one laughing all the way to the bank,"WRONG"!After new pistons, rods, dogs and toggles, governor, fanshaft, drive disc, and more parts you can stick in the back of a swb truck I was into that thing as deep as you could just about buy two running 70's.Upon startup an oil line broke feeding the left side main bearing which made a big mess. When we was loading the 70 the truck hooked to the gooseneck jacknifed while pulling the tractor on.Then the guy told me before they parked it it had flipped on a hill almost ending his existance.I should have left it there but didn't.I too had mine budgeted but after sinking so much I couldn't stop till I had it done.My two happiest days was when I purchased it and when I traded it off.I did find a guy who had some of what I needed by the name of"Shorty Dear"in TX(which some will remember). He really did me right on the price but passed shortly there after.I wish you the best and maybe you can find a good parts tractor cheap.

Hey big hunter, When you get done with that one, you can do my xt. It"s a lpg tractor, so since it would be good experience for you, I"d let you do it for free. You"ll have to pick it up after nov 1, and I"ll need it back by may 1.

That sounds exactly like the one I had.. Approximately 4000 hours on it. Everything seemed fine. Everything about it was excellent. It started jumping out of gear soon after I got it. Then the powerdirector started slipping. I had the dealer take it in to fix it. $6000 later I got it back. This was in 1979. I wish you the best. Wayne

Oh man,I've been there before. Want some advise? If you are anywhere near a boneyard that will buy it,sell it now! I bought a 3010 Deere and a 706 Farmall that started right out that way. I'd be a good ten grand wealthier today if I'd just hauled them to the boneyard and sold them for a loss before I ever put another dime in to either one of them.

Yup, and I'll tell ya why I gave myself that name. I bought a '49 JD B tractor for my first project. I got it cheap, but that's because it was a parts tractor and was missing alot of things. When I loaded it I found the rear wheels were locked up, that was the first clue that I was in for trouble. With every bolt I twisted off, I found myself getting farther in over my head. I pulled the head off the engine and found a 2" by 4" hole in one of the cylinder walls. I still haven't located a block for it, and I'm still in too deep. Good luck and I feel your pain.

WAY "back in the day", my Uncle bought a NEW 190XT. IT also turned out to be a "can of worms", as well, and SOON.

I guess nothing much has changed over the years!
