this spring the neighbor was planting with his 4020 diesel. something broke in the rear end, it clattered real bad in any foreward gear, reverse was quiet. yesterday he had the tractor on the auger filling bins. (probably a bad idea with the rear end condition) tractor started pulling hard on the auger and then a loud bang. pto is out. not being familiar with the rear end on this tractor, how hard is it to repair and or rebuild? does the tractor need to be split to access the trans? kinda looking for thoughts on this, if its not to bad a job, i may tackle it for him.

PTO problem is likely at the very back where one can change shafts for 540 r 1000 rpms. There are gears there that some foriegn object may have become lodged in them. As for trans/diff. noise,I think it would have to be spit between clutch and trans case and final drives removed. Tx Jim

It is difficult to understand why he continued to use the tractor after:

"this spring the neighbor was planting with his 4020 diesel. something broke in the rear end, it clattered real bad in any foreward gear"

Now months later after he has really screwed up things, he wants you to fix it?

Run. Tom

he didnt plan on using the 4020 for the auger, 3phase motor on the other auger went out, he hires out his combining, it was in the field combining corn, the grain carts were backing up, so in a pinch he put the 4020 on the other auger. i offered him one of my tractors to run the auger, but he didn t want to borrow one. he's a great neighbor, just not a mechanic.

Time to sell it for scrap or to somebody who thinks they can fix it for $500.00 and have a $15,000 tractor.

Might have to split between engine & clutch housing or clutch housing & trans. or take final drives off, could be a big job. Don

We had a problem like that with a one of our 4020 JD , the PTO quit working while the neighbor was using it, wound up a shaft broke on the inside, had to split the tractor in three pcs to get it fixed.
