Need some suggestons. Have just aquired a 48 Studebaker 3Ton?? truck. It has the 6 cylinder flathead engine. My plans are to fix it up & tow my trailer with it to shows. I figure that the most I will be hauling is about 14,000 lbs (2 LA Case) & that little six is not going to get it done. Looks to have a lot of room in engine compartment, so thinking of a diesel. Suggestion as to what size & type woud be appreciated. I know nothing about diesels other than what I have read here. Will change out running gear also. Thanks for any help. Chuck

I'm not sure if they did it in '48, but I know Studebaker put a diesel intheir light trucks in the 1950s.

Thanks for the responses. Seems to confirm what I had thought about. Putting in a 6 cylinder diesel (probably a Cummings). I have a 2002 Ford dually, 4 dr cab & 8' bed with a V-10. Trailer is a 24' gooseneck with triple axles. When I ran it across the scale here weighed 24,945 lbs with a Case L & aLA on it. Truck was almost out of gas
I want the Studebaker because of looks but not too modern & I want haul to shows with older truck. It had a dump grain bed on so is pretty clean body.

I would be excited to put that cummins in it because it follows the old straight six, you could almost drop one in!

Son's buddy bought a Ford schoolbus with 8.1 or 8.2L (Can't remember) V-8 diesel with Allison automatic for $8 or $900. Had 2 nearly new tires on front. Pretty good shape overall. Made it into a cheap motorhome. Something similar would make a pretty cheap donor vehicle.

My LA weighs 8.5 K and you have to add the trailer to that.

You are correct the little Study is not a HP hog but then the gearing will make up for a lot of that.

I have a 53 IHC L-160 18.5 K GVW and a small overhead six, it will pull a hefty load but not at 60 or 70 MPH.

I would look into a small 300 to 350 CID 6 Diesel it will fit better and do all right with the same gearing.
