Hi all. A quick question. I have a young hereford bull that a neighbor would like to use to breed two heifers. What is the going rate for having my bull service his stock? I don't have any idea.

I pay $100 per month rent for registered angus. I usually get two, they come with fertility reports, and keep them for 3 months. If I lose them or they die I must pay for the animal.

Wow, thanks for all the quick replies.

Walt- that's an awesome looking bull. My other bull is the same breed, but only around 800 lbs right now. I hope he turns out like that. I'd have to keep him if he did. He's already serviced all my animals.

Here's some background: I just met the guy. He's about 3 miles away. He's 80 years old and he let me drive through his fields to get my silage wagons down a hill from land I was leasing.

So I had my wife make him a cake as a thank you and he nearly chewed me out about that. He didn't want anything in return for that favor. Had I known he needed a bull I would have just taken it over there as a thank you.

So to offer him another thank you, or do him a favor, would really tick him off. He's expecting to pay and wants to pay. This is PA dutch country, btw. People don't like to be treated special or feel they owe people favors in return. Business get taken care of as business.

I'm going to charge hime a small fee then. $10 per heifer. I think that will satisfy him and cover the time it takes me to round this animal up. I'm aware of the animal health risks. It's not worth worrying about though. I'll let the good Lord watch over the bull.

Local sales barn owner rents bulls- usually for a year. No charge- since the farmer feeds them. Death loss is the owner's responsibility, not the farmer's. Brings out one of serviceable age, picks up well-grown baloney bull.

IF WILL YOU JUST ASK THE BULL , I AM CONFIDENT HE WILL BE HAPPY TO ACCOMODATE THEM! A gOod bull is ususally neighborly about such situations.

Its gotta be worth something for your time and effort plus if they only have 2 cows you will end up having to haul the bull both ways plus get him up.Also what if he breaks a leg going on and off the trailer who will take the loss? I learned my lesson when I lent a guy a buck goat he bought him back to me in a piece of junk pen in the back of a pickup and the buck dislocated his shoulder when he was being unloaded. So from now on I just sell a bull or buck and they can take them to market after they are thru with them.

It's customary to not charge money for breeding cows- especially if it's your own neighbor's cows!

Charging money for a Bull is like a pimp. That's cow prostitution!

a neighbor lets us use his bull every year, we always ask what we owe him, he always says just keep being a good neighbor, and besides, you feed him which means i didn't have too.

I would not charge him. Things are not always about money. I am glad you are not my neighbor. Maybe you should consider that you will not be feeding your bull for the 60 days he is there. Does that help your pocketbook?

I guess it would depend on how well you know the neighbors. Some years ago, one of our neighbors allowed some new neighbors to use his bull for a couple of months to service their 10 or so cows. There might have been a fee involved, but I don't think so.

When the time period was up, he thought he would hear from the new neighbors, but he didn't. So he went over there to look for his black Angus bull. The bull was not there, so he waited for the people to get home from working in town. The guy told him that the bull had died about a month before and they had buried him. The guy pointed to a place where some digging had been done with a backhoe, but they didn't dig it back up. They couldn't come up with a good reason why they had not contacted the bull owner about the animal dieing and letting him see why it might have died.

I was told that the matter ended up in small claims court and after many hours of time invested the new neighbors were ordered to pay for the bull. But since the small claims court didn't have any real teeth, they never paid anything. I bet they ate that bull that winter and they buried it in their freezer. Or else they sold it...who knows?

The bull was probably worth $1000 to $1500 and the matter was not worth taking to a higher court. It might have been, if they had a written contract that required the new neighbors to return the bull by a certain date or else pay a stated amount of money. But the way it was done, it just looked like a way to spend more money on attorneys and maybe not ever get anything back on the deal.

Those new neighbors didn't stay in the area very long. Apparently they had other business dealings that were about as shady, and I heard they ended up losing the property. None of the neighbors would have anything to do with them after awhile.

So I guess I would say be real careful and pay attention to what is happening to your animal. Most people are reasonably honest, but you never know...good luck!
