Is there anything I can sow this fall that's worth a darn that I can cut for hay in the spring long about April or May? Winter rye? Oats? Any suggestions? Thanks, Casey

Lot of guys around me use rye may graze it just a bit in the winter and then let it grow and head to a milk stage to bale for hay after the weather breaks in the spring we have used oats but plant everything in the spring

Wheat is the obvious choice, but I would ask how are you going to bale and store it? I dont think it stores worth a darn in big bales, outside. If you can put it inside then yes it's good hay.

I used to do rye. It's pretty fun to cut.

Please just go to your local extension office as they will know which seeds are correct for your area and your needs.

Many triticale varieties will get tall and make better and more hay or silage than wheat. Or a grazing blend of grass, oats, wheat, triticale & rye for just grazing.

They would make a great silage crop, but at least in my country, if fall planted, they're ready to cut for hay long before the weather has turned.

I've heard of oat hay but usually I think sown in spring and baled in summer.
