I like how the picture gets farther and farther away !

Also looks like they picked up the extinguisher so it didn't burn up.

Those pictures scare the heck out of me. I run a machine very similar to that, and it's just so darn BIG, you can't see what's going on behind the little glass box perched above the feederhouse. Forget it if it's nighttime picking beans. The only thing that would tell me something is wrong is the all the low-speed beepers. I agree, on-board extinguishing systems oughtta be standard.

Nothing burns like a Deere.

Go to a major combine salvage yard and you will likely see more burnt Deeres than the others. Kind of like back in the 70's and the IH 15 series gasser combines.

A few years back (10 or 15) there was rash of NH's burnt up in one harvest season and their sales took a slump. Majority of them had a bearing inside of the combine that would get hot enough to set the straw on the walkers on fire. I don't think they have that problem anymore. With the modern stuff added to the machines nowdays I wouldn't think it would be too hard to add exstinguisher system. Heck, they could add another ten thousand dollars to the machine then. LOL

buickanddeere is right on; for good measure, add a cup or so of Class A foam before filling the extinguisher.

The beauty of this system is that a Schrader valve can be added to the valve assembly of the extinguisher and it can be filled by anyone with a garden hose and an air compressor.

A cheapo 5 or 10lb dry chem ABC or a BC CO2 extinguisher is a complete and total waste of time. And a false sense of security on a class A fire. A couple of class A 2-1/2 gallon pressured water extinguishers provide the long lasting cooling and deep saturation required for class A fires. In all seriousness. A full bladder would have been better than that toy extinguisher. How many hundred thousand $$$ for that machine and they couldn't spring the price of a couple bottle of good scotch for decent extinguishers? As for why there are not onboard extinguisher systems? $$$ to design, install & maintain. And I'd wager not one in 10 systems would work after 3 years. The other mistake the owner and /or operator made was they didn't face the machine into the wind at the 1st sign of smoke. I'd say a fire on a machine that new was due to some tinkerer not putting something electric, fuel or hydraulic back together properly.

In a commercial environment, fire extinguisher's get checked once a month and serviced if necessary.

Good point and very important. I forgot to to mention adding some AFFF. Even dish soap is better than nothing. Dishwasher soap and laundry soap work excellent as a water wetter. I've checked thousands on Monthly inspections on A,ABC,BC & D extinguihers. And weighed more CO2 cartridges than I can remember. One night I freaked out a couple of operators. We had class BC CO2 units going out for thier pressure vessel test. I had kept blowing down extinguishers into the same garbage barrel. After emptying over a hundred 5 & 10lb CO2 units. The barrels sides were covered in frost but yet appeared to be smoking from the vapours flowing down from the around the lid. The operators certain the fire alarm had to be sounded as the garbage barrel was "smoking". And that was still after pointing out to them the frost on the barrel sides and the cold vapours dropping instead of raising.

I still don't see why a built in extinguishing system isn't standard on these things.

All that hydraulic fluid makes one big fire when it catches on fire and just about impossible to put out.

Youch! Doesn't look like the fire extinguisher did much good. At least he got it out of the field.

Just thought that I had a down day with a large dent in my truck door.

Was Allen in the field with his camera?
