Yes I know he's brought some grass clods back to the surface, in too deep and the land was only ploughed a few minutes earlier. These machines will make a level, fine and firm seedbed in one pass in almost all soil conditions.
The packer roller on the rear has cleaning teeth on the rear frame to stop soil build-up.
Most arable farmers will mount a grain drill on top of the power harrow to make a one-pass operation. David

There appears to be a PTO shaft coming out from the back of the gear-box. What would that be used for? I would like to see a picture of that rig with a seeder mounted to it. That's exactly what I'd like to have to renevate pastures and hay fields!

It seems when min-tillers and "conventional tillers" meet there is no opportunities for jokes.

Looks like sea gulls. Funny, even here in IA when I am out disking, etc.. a flock will show up to eat whatever gets turned up, worms, grubs, etc. We are 40 miles from the nearest lake/resevoir big enough to sustain a gull flock. I have no idea how they can tell a tractor is doing tillage and get all their friends to show up.

Nice Picture. How fast is he running? Is that a slow operation or can he roll right along? With all the plowing over there, don't you have a erosion problem? Chris

I think their rain patterns are like the Pacific Northwest- drizzly, but very seldom a "gully-washer" like you get in the midwest. Erosion problems pretty much nil here, with just the most basic safeguards in place (like don't plow up and down on hills- duh!)

I never did hear an answer back when I asked if they did any no-till.

It must be how they make that island bigger-let it wash out into the sea.

First, take a look at the countryside there. Have you ever considered how long that land has been under the plow? A hell of a lot longer than anywhere Stateside and from what I can see.....the ground looks damned fine to me.

Secondly, our English/Welsh/Scottish cousins have machines I have never seen before....a power harrow? Wonder why we don't see them marketed here? Probably because you can't convince a bonehead that anything works but no till!

No till has it's place....but it isn't a panacea for all tillage requirements. Erosion is mainly a problem in the mid-west, where it is flat, windy and dry. Elsewhere it isn't nearly the consideration as it is in that region. The moldboard plow is a fine instrument and not to be discarded as a useless relic of the past or the uninformed. It is good to turn the soil over.

Also notice in the pictures David posts....they are always turning under a cover crop of some kind. That is how they protect the soil and....feed it. That is some of prettiest farm country I have ever seen (in pictures). I also like the use of front fenders..they don't have mud slung all over their tractor that way...or them if no cab is used. The front 3 point is something I like...but that front plow doesn't seem like such a great idea to me....too cumbersome.
