Just read Wendys post below about doing 105 in a 40 zone and I know she feels crazy for doing what she did. Crazy, yes, but as the saying goes live and learn . Still we all did crazy things as kids ourselves. So, let's not leave her feeling alone in her misery. Tell us all about your first speeding ticket. What kind of car, where were you at, but most importantly how fast were you going. With some of the "old timers" on this board I'm sure there are some exciting stories to be shared. Not an "old timer" myself, yet, but my first was driving my 55 Chevy 210 wagon back to the Naval Base in Charleston, SC back in '88 or '89. I was headed down I-77 through Rock Hill, SC and had opened the four barrel on my 283 up a llttle til I was running well over 100 for a mile or two before backing off. When the blue lights came on I had already come off the gas and had been coasting for a mile or so just letting her slow down naturally. Turns out I was running 70 in a 55 zone, although I honestly thought it had turned to a 65 zone already. Fortunately the officer took pity on me and dropped the speed on the ticket down to 60 in a 55 so it didn't hurt my driving record. I'm just glad he wasn't sitting a couple of miles further back up the road than he was or I'd have been walking myself. The irony of my whole situation though was that I had made the same trip about every other weekend for over a year and until that weekend no one had ever mentioned getting a ticket to me. That weekend all I heard from everybody I talked to was "don't get a ticket", "their out there this weekend, don't get a ticket", etc etc. What did I do, I got a ticket....I think everybody jinxed me.....

Been driving 40 years and I haven't had a speeding ticket yet. third party image

The secret is: always know the speed limit and always drive within it. Then you never have to worry. third party image

For some reason when I say that people usually end up shouting at me, I've no idea why. third party image third party image third party image

1974 or 5, I think- ticket was unremarkable (35 or 40 in a 25, in a typical small town speed trap- you think you're out of town, but still 25 limit- good revenue source for these little burgs). What was funny was when I told my wife- she smiled and pulled out her first ticket, too- written within 5 minutes of mine, in a town 25 miles away. We've each averaged about one every 10 years since- but not on the same day.

My son is now 19 years old. When he was a baby, his mother got caught speeding by "Uncle Ray". He was our neighbor and I consider him a friend.
He let her go with a warning because Michael was crying and she was trying to get him to Grandma's house.

You would cry to, if your mother pinched you.

My Dad was a radio dispatcher for the State Patrol. One morning he told me that one of my classmates had gotten a ticket. He had been doing ok at the top of the hill, but had let the horses run going downhill. He must have been doing about 100.

"I know" I said,"I was in the backseat."

Not speeding but for driving. It was 1942 and I was 10 years old and I drove the truck loaded with wheat to the elevator. Got stopped by the sheriff and spanked and told to not bring the truck to town again. Did drive the truck again but did not get caught.

Well just a few I remember....

94 in a 45
85 in a 35
improper equipment (drag slicks, exhaust (also have 2.5" zoomies)
drag racing
reckless driving
and on and on
many threatened citations for Nitrous, Officers claim a 2000psi bottle in the truck is dangerous and illegal.

I have a love for racing, especially street racing.

still have the car, but the two little passengers have taught me I need to learn to drive smarter.
No more racing. Car was great for racing against guys on the import bikes that dont know how to drive them.

Took the supercharger and the nitrous off the motor and now it is actually controllable when driving.

Never got a speeding ticket. Had a few others though:

Failure to maintain control
Snow on rear license plate
Seat belt violations galore
License plate lights out
No license plate
No proof of insurance ($340 fine. ouch!)

That's not to say that in all my years driving, I haven't had excessive speed. Indeed, for years I drove the same stretch of road, about 35 miles and to be on time I had to do it in 30 minutes. Drove it everyday with my foot to the floor, seat belt off, and changing into my work uniform. Periodically saw a cop or state trooper, but they were always hiding behind a semi and I just blew past them in the other lane. All I know is the speedometer went to 85 in my first 3 cars, and on this journey I never could see the needle.

I never did claim to be a particularly bright light bulb in the pack!

1975, I just turned 18, driving 1968 Mustang GT. Speeding ticket for 105mph in 55 zone with 4 other worse tickets. Night in jail, $400 bail. The cop was fired for it and all 5 tickets were dismissed by judge. Got bail money back and went to El Paso and Jaurez for a $400 weekend with a buddy. (Dad was not happy about that!)

BTW, I wasn´t speeding.

My wife was stopped in this car for doing around 90 in 55 she told the cop she had to go to the bathroom and was in hurry he let her go but followed her into the station where ran for the Toilet. It is a 1968 Saab Sonett and I still have it out in the barn. With a lifetime Warranty on the engine and running gear. Car would easily do 130 MPH. Walt third party image

Never had one yet... but I've done enough stupid stuff to deserve a few. 2 verbal warnings, one drivng my '67 Mustang to see a girlfriend 2 hours away at college (abut 12 yeares ago) and one on the way back to tech school,(15 years ago) -both for 10 over in a 55 zone. Somewhat older and more careful now, (best friend is a cop, I got married, and am a father...)but still get going a little too fast now and then. The night Luke was born (7 weeks early and breach), Anne was taken by ambulence from the local hospital to a bigger one a 2 hour drive away. I was sent home to get some clothes and stuff, but almost beat the ambulence there, even with a bathroom and caffiene stop half way there and slowing to close to the speed limit thru towns. Left home at 2:45 AM, got there 1 hour and 20 minutes later. You do the math. :) Anne's Buick got me from the hospital in town to our house, but the '00 Mustang took me to the other hospital.

Mine was handy 10 years ago, and the only one I've had... Was doing 122 in a 100 KM. I saw him, but not in time. Was doing about 140 only moments before.
Now I watch a lot closer. That's saved me more times than I can count. Get a lot of dirty looks from cops when I go past and they know I was speeding... but they just didn't get a fix quick enough.
I think the one ticket I did get cost me 157.50, 4 points and a week on foot...

77 in a 65 on the interstate. Note to self: when the pack of cars you are following suddenly slows down, follow suit. I didn't. Instead I went flying past all those cars that slowed down. I was still cursing the other drivers for slowing down when then those pretty blue lights pulled out behind me. It was also the last day of the month, I should have known...

Been lucky over the years, no speeding tickets, but a couple for other things. The most embarrassing was for "operating left of center", while gazing off at some woman beside the road. The cop that wrote that ticket had to change his shorts first, I looked up just in time to swerve and miss him.

My first "speeding ticket" I got was a 35 in a 25 zone, I was really going 42MPH and this young female cop gave me the ticket. I had another ticket for an illegal left when I was 19 years old. Knock on wood only 2 tickets in 22 years. It helps to have a slow car too.

Traded it for a big Ol' white Olds and no more tickets until I bought my 1968 Saab Sonett Blue this time but all the cops had to stop me just to see what I was driving. Kids Can't win sometimes.

Thought I had out grown it ( 20+ years later ), I got 73 in a 55. Oh well, I guess I was getting sloppy. gotta be careful now. I have to protect my CDL, as well as the lives of my self and others in the area.

Back in 1985, 46 in a 30 zone with a 49 Ford pickup that I'd swapped a 292 Y-block with 3 deuces into. Good thing he didn't catch me 5 minutes earlier when I was doing 75 in a 30 zone. I beat the ticket, got the cop to put his foot in his mouth in court.

Not speeding but the first ticket was for running a stop sign.

Was driving a truck and trailer for a lumber yard delivering wood.

No brakes on the trailer. No lights. And no chauffeur's license.

He never noticed the other things so I just got the ticket for the stop sign. (:~})

Brakes and lights got fixed that afternoon.

73 in a 55 zone in my 82 Ford F150 351W C-6 auto. A couple miles before it was pegged at 85 - probably didn't go much faster than that, was pretty well worn out.

81 in a 65 in my 88 Thunderbird 3.8 AOD auto. Cost me 6 points on my license.

Care required in my 98 Neon, rolled it trying to go 80 around a curve in a 45 zone, cop was a friend of mine and didn't want me to lose my license. He also appreciated my honesty.

53 in a 45 in my 94 Honda del Sol. The group of bikers ahead of me was going at least 70, but they didn't get stopped.

This isn't a speeding ticket, but one Saturday afternoon a buddy of mine from Orange Park, FL was driving on a suspended license. We'd just started across the St. Johns River drawbridge in Jacksonville when we met a cop who recognized Scott. By the time the cop stopped us on the other end of the bridge, I was driving.

Switching drivers at 45 mph in the middle of a drawbridge isn't a stunt I'd like to try a second time.

The first ticket I remember was one I got in the late 80's for "Exhibition Driving" Got caught spinning my tires and making a godawful racket on main street in Platte South Dakota in my 72 Blazer trying to impress some girls. Cost me 40 bucks. But you know how it is - "no such thing as bad publicity" and "women love outlaws".
The girls where still impressed. The cop was not.

Once was 87 in a 70 zone east of Tucumcari, NM in a '57 Merc--after I'd come up hill for a mile. I told the trooper, "See that butte over yonder? I've been sitting here for an hour trying to get it to move".

Anyway, the trooper just made the ticket out for 80 in a 70 zone. As it was the middle of the afternoon, I stopped in traffic court in Tucumcari, instead of going to a roadside JP. I walked out for $15. A dollar per mile over the limit and $5 court costs.

A Nebraska State Trooper once clocked a cousin of mine at 86, towing a sprint car on a trailer behind a '64 Pontiac station wagon. My cousin said he'd heard of people having a conniption before, but he'd never actually seen one.

While there was a pile of stuff my Father said I thought was well meaning but out of touch. I did listen to this little gem. " Son, save up them speeding tickets, they are worth something. When you get three, you can trade them for a bicycle".

Never had one, but I wont say if I have or havent driven before (smirks). Dont worry, I do stupid things all the time. All you can do is make sure no one saw what happened and learn something from it. You guys tend to be pretty forgiving about my stupid mistakes,

First was 97 in a 51 merc. Buddy said it would run faster in 2nd overdrive than in 3rd. He was right. Cost $35 bucks IIRC. Had enough tickets since then to paper the walls in my house. BTW, it would only top out at 105. 22 MPG no matter how you drove it. Gas was 18.9 cents.

Dave, if a "51 Merc can get 105.22 MPG (miles per gallon), I"ve just got to rush out and find me one! Or maybe the oil companies bought them all up. LOL Sorry, couldn"t resist.

1976 - Man that was a while ago! 72 in a 35 zone for me, had community service for 4 weekends ( picking up trash) and a $400 fine and driving school. Was driving my brothers Hurst/Olds 442
trying to impress my friends. It didn't work, but they sure disappeared as soon as the blue lights came on.

I got pulled over for drag racing on a Honda V65 magna against a suzuki gs1000. Won the race and got pulled over doing 150 in a 55. Lucky me the state cop was a friend and he told me to take it home and sell it cause if he seen me on it again he would put me under the jail. No ticket and probably saved my life by making me sell it. I think I should go see him and thank him.

Well, i didn't get the ticket, but, leaving Columbia, SC, one very early, dark morning, and about 10 miles on Rt.(then)26, toward I-95), some nit-wit passed us at a high rate of speed! Tweren't very long until i saw a faint flashing blue light approaching fast. Went past us, and disappeared. About 5 miles down the road, there was the speeder, getting a ticket. Of course, we went on by. Later on, i saw headlights approaching from behind, and soon, the same speeder blasted past us! (Guess he was a slow learner!) And soon, i saw the blue light coming up from way back! We kept going at the speed limit. And, some miles down the road, again, was the speeder in hand-cuffs, and being invited to sit in the police car!

Don"t know what those guys in Columbia do for patrol cars but they seem to find some fast ones. I remember heading back to Charleston one night (sometime in "86 or "87) and was right outside of Columbia when the same thing happened. Guy flew by me like I saw standing still and a minute or two later I see the blue lights fast approaching and thought he was coming for me since I was running over 70. Like you said he flew by me and a few miles down the road had the other guy pulled over. I think tat the time the cop I saw was driving one of the new Mustang 5.0"s but whatever it was it was FAST.
