When I was growing up on the farm we raised Timothy and "herds grass" also called red top which I cannot find seed for. Red Top was a very small stem hay--smaller than timothy---and bloomed red at maturity. i would think it would be great horse hay but wondered if the variety is gone?

It's still available in Eastern Washington, but the seed company I checked had a listing of various grasses with their nutrition values. Red Top was one of the lowest.

Does anyone have a picture of Redtop in bloom? I have some grass in my fields that matures with a very fine wispy red bloom and seeds. It is a lot like Panicum and I think it is Redtop but don't know for sure.

I know you can still get it, as a neighbor has his horse hayfield in it...I also sowed some when we put some land in crp 10 years ago or so. I agree that it is a nice grass and seems to make excellent hay.
