O/T: Ford 4.6 and 5.4 swap?

A friend of mine has a 1998 Ford van, E250, auto. It has a 5.4 in it, rod bearing is out. He can buy a 4.6 out of a Lincoln. Will these engines interchange? Or too many differences in electronics, bellhousing bolt pattern, etc?

Opinions and suggestions welcome.

Thank you for your time.

Anthony

I think there is a couple different versions of both engines and either may require the appropriate computer from the donor vehicle.

I've got a small used car lot and we have a '98 Lincoln Continental with the DOHC 32-valve 4.6 and I can bust just about anything on the road with that car, talk about a sleeper. WOW!!!

It would be alot of self-inflicted pain. Why put a smaller engine in anyway?

Computers and wires and other stuff should be the deciding point for you. Find a drop in 5.4 and be done with it... no farting around with new computers and stuff.

What's the year on the Lincoln engine? If I recall correctly the 1997 to 2002 have the plastic intake manifold - a $600 repair waiting to happen if it hasn't already been repaired. The 1991-1996 have the leaky valve stem seals (another $600 repair) that need to be replaced every 100K.

The transmission will bolt right up, but the computers issues need to be addressed.

Wouldn't the "modular" 5.4 and 4.6 be (nearly) identical mounting-wise?

I don't know how confused the 'puter might get though, with it's "fuel map". I would THINK 'puter/emissions issues would be the big hurdle.
