I have been shopping for a lawn tractor with mower deck. I have looked at several and am considering a Poulan 26 HP with 54inch cut. Has anyone had any experience good or bad with this brand of mower?

thanks for any input you may have.

As long as you know what PM is, the Poulan Pro tractors are probably one of the best Box Store tractors. they are not even close to being the best on the market, but they are far from being as cheaply built as the MTD and MTD made mowers. MTD builds: White, Yardman, Troybuilt, Yard Machine, Cub Cadt, and such.

A Polan lawn tractor is made by AYP (American Yard Products). They make most of Sears and all of Husqvarna tractors. There are a lot of lawn tractors that are identical if you look close, just painted different and different plastic on them. MTD has bought out just about everything. They are masters of disquise. They have bought out Cub Cadet and have painted a lot of their junk yellow and white. The big thing is the engine and the transaxle. The best transaxle is Hydrogear. It is a hydrostatic drive which is almost indestructable. MTD has taken belts, pulleys, smoke and mirrows and made a maintenance nightmare and call it autodrive on some models. They own Yardman, Toro, Troy Built. and several other brands. Poulan is pretty decent. Look at the engine and transmission.

2 guys in a pickup stopped one day and asked me if i wanted the rusty tractor in the bed of the truck! I asked if the engine was bad, and they said no, it needs some TLC! Free for the taking! So, i checked it out next day. Yep, it needed a lot of work, including a carburetor. Had some rust, deck mandrells were noisy and rusted. I noticed that the tractor looked like a Craftsman machine, under the outer skin! So, after much work, i finally got it running, and now i use it to mow my lawn. Here's something. The carb was so bad, i couldn't use it. So, i adapted a carb from an older Tecumseh engine, and made it work. The engine on it is a Tecumseh.! Some made up linkage, from coat hanger wire, and it runs great!

A poulan is an economy garden tractor. Try to find out if they are the same as a Husqvarna. If they are it's an OK machine. Husqvarna and Craftsman are both made by the same company but usually use different engines. Poulan models may be made by someone else. Dave

It's smaller than what you want, but I just bought a Cub Cadet,19hp Kohler, 42 in. for $1699, 2 year financing same as cash. It probably has gremlins and weaknesses, but seems to have some decent features for an entry level machine. LT 1042 model.

No, sorry. I dont want to offend the deere people here, just have had a real bad experience with the new mower. They used to make some real good stuff, but have just dropped the ball lately. Its a real shame.I can tell you to avoid the brand new Deere mowers by any means nessicary. My mom got a LT190 for $5000 from a crappy dealership, it wont start in winter, backfires, guzzles gas, is confusing to operate, has uncomfortable seat, is WAY over powered and has just plain horrible tracton I have worked with mowers dating back to the 50s and can honestally say that this is alot worse of a machine then any of them. Deere used to make some good stuff, mowers and tractors, but have just dropped it with their new small machinery. You'll be usin that 8N and a chain to pull that thing more then you like. It is a 2005 LT190
