Just got off the phone with what I thought was a friend. Claims he bought a tractor 800 miles west of here last night. He wants me to haul it for him.
I told him I do not haul for hire, he should look around for someone who makes a living at it.
He informed me I had to. He would just buy my fuel. He said he knows I haul tractors because he has seen me doing it.
I told him I haul my own junk and sometimes others around here close, but I do not haul over the road for other folks and I am not for hire.
He really got hot and said he wanted me to do it this weekend.
I do not owe this guy a thing...money or otherwise. Heck, I do not even know him that well.
Reminds me of a city employee last year. Said he wanted me to cut some property in town...said the weeds were too high. I told him I do not do that...I have my own mowing to do...he got hot also. Heck, I do not have a city contract...don't want one.
I hate pushy folks..don't mind doing a friend a favor, but hate pushy folks.
Guess I am getting old.....

When someone tells me I have to do something thats when it don't get done. First explain to him that you don't "haul for hire" That is what I do. Then tell him where he can buy a trailer at like yours to haul his eqpt.

I was in a good mood once , (only once LOL)and picked up a hitchhiker(indian) He told me he needed to get to Madison and that I should take him to HWY 53. I told him I wasn't going to be going that far. I took him further than I would have normally gone. He appearred to not want to get out of the car. He acted as if I was a jerk for not finishing what I started, which was to get him to the Hwy 53.

I am looking to buy an old tractor, but before I got serious I checked with a HS classmate at a reunion if he would be able to help me out. And I certainly don't expect him to do it as a favor.

That cost of shipping does limit what I can pay and how far I can look, but that is the way it is.

Was fueling up my Tractor, with backhoe and frontend loader on it, at the local service station. A guy came up and said I want you to go around the corner and down the block and work on my driveway. I said "I don't work for the public". He got mad and said "You need to sell your equipment then". I said "you need to go buy you some and you could be here talking to stupid people like I am."

Tell the goof to pay for your commercial vehicle insurance and about $50/hr. Unless you have special insurance to haul other peoples equipment, if something happened and the tractor was wrecked your "pal" would be SOL and blame you. You'ld probably be in trouble too. A really good friend would discuss the whole thing with you first and offer to pay whatever you thought was fair. I'm in the same boat and trying to change things. I have a good friend who used to say I had a sign on my forhead that said "use me". I hate being taken advantage of by people that figure you have nothing better to do or owe it to them. What's worse is if you need their help or something and they are always too busy. I have no use for selfish people. Just say no! Dave

They Are Something Else. in reply to Bill46, 09-19-2007 10:08:50
People are something else.I practice law for a living. Contrary to popular belief it is not an easy living. Hard work , all day long surrounded by difficult people. I have people try and get me to work for free all the time. They act like all I have to do is call the other lawyer who is suing them and the whole thing will disappear or something. I deal daily with people who think they can dine and dash if they want. I'm pretty much now at the point where all fees are paid up front in advance , cash money , no exceptions. I have been ripped off by Preachers , Lawyers , Doctors , all their wives , relatives and friends. It seems like they think I am printing money in the back or something. I pay two costly employees , a big building payment , insurance coverage beyond your wildest dreams and an awful lot of taxes and professional fees. Many months there is little money left for me for my hours and hours of work. You need to tell that guy to shove off.Who wants to go home and work for free after you work all week .This line ,"I'll pay for the fuel" insults your intelligence and ignores the steep price of acquiring and maintaining heavy equipment. Refer him to a professional hauler. And look for a new friend.

My friends and acquaintances know to check with me BEFORE buying a tractor, or expecting me to be there to help.

I"m happy to help for nothing if I"m asked. If I"m told to do something, it will be expensive.

You did the right thing.

I think he would have arranged the hauling before he bought the tractor. I don't like pushy people my self, especially the phone callers trying to sell me something I don't need. Stan

"Tell him $5 per mile, both ways, cash up front."

Then hire someone to do it for $2.00.

Anyone who acts like that deserves nothing. I would tell him to kiss off. Have had to do that myself with a "friend" he told me I was going to change the motor in a car even told me I was going to do it in my spare time. He had to have it done at a shop for premium dollar. If he would have asked me I would have done it for beer and materials. We are still friends but he learned.

thats society today, people think every one owes them, because they are the center of the universe. I have the same issue with a few of my frei....aquantances, they want something from you they want if for nothing, they have something you want, they want top dollar for it. They need help they are calling you to "get over right away, it'll only take 5 minutes" knowing full well it will be an all afternoon affair, yet when you really need help, they are too busy, cant do it, back is out, expecting visitors. It's always something. The one that got me the other week was a buddy that owes me al bit over $500, I had no cash on me one day out scouting and asked him for abuck for a pop at the gas station. Get this, when we got back home he had the nerve to ask me if I could grab the dollar i owed ghim from the house before he left. I said exactly what just came to your mind after reading this.

I went to a buddy's trailer at the race track to get a set of gears. He wasn't there and his pitman informed me that they don't loan out gears. I told that was fine with me-just get MY gears out of YOUR car and I will use them.

Which reminds me of a saying I first saw on this board, from Nebraska Cowman, "If a guy owes you 20 bucks, and you never see him again, it was probably worth it."

Made me LOL! Thinking of a guy who owes me 50 and it still is true. Thanks.

Exactly! The reason I remembered it is that when I saw it, I was owed (exactly) 20 bucks by a guy who is the biggest PITA in the county! Always bragging about how well off he is, etc. etc. If I could assure I would never see him again, it would be worth sending him another sawbuck.

Oh...no doubt about that. 23 years in the Army gave me two big feet to stand on. Ya might knock me down...but I stand my ground.
