Mine was a 6 volt starter with an alternator, 12 volt battery and negative ground. Many have been changed over the years. If it has a generator with a cutout mounted on the generator it is more than likely a 6 volt positive ground. Does it have a battery and how is it connected. I just changed mine over from 12 volt neg ground to 6 volt positive ground and installed a generator and 6 volt voltage reulator.

Paul;

If it is still a 6 Volt system with a generator then it is 6 Volt Positive ground.
As far as the oil is concerned, it depends on what has been run in it,Detergent-Non-Detergent.
If you have contact with the previous owner ask him. If unknown then start with a low detergent oil & see what happens.

Vern ought to have said 'was positive ground when new' There is always the possibility of it being changed, if it has a dynamo. Look at the battery posts if is there, or check the voltage regulator as that would need to be changed over. Risk may be slight, but....
