Ernest MacPherson was his name.He was born in 1899 to a farm familly.He raised 3 girls with his wife and made their living on the same farm which he was born on.He never had glasses,a hearing aid,could still walk where he needed to go up till a few weeks ago.Reconized everyone he knew as soon as he saw them,even if he hadn't seem them for a few years.He farmed with horses most of his career,drove till he was 95 and alos lived in his own house till that point as well.He fell and broke his hip when he was 97,and the family feared that would be his end,but no.He even had several bouts of skin cancer when he was 102 and also when he was 105,had all the treatments with a breeze.He was the most amazing living history book.He saw the first cars in the area,witnesed most of the standing buildings being built in the area,saw probbably more mechanical and cultural changes in a lifetime than most will ever witness.No,maybe he didn't save or really change the world,but he sure had a good and long long long life.RIP Ernie.pd

We had a guy in my lodge that lived to be 99. He was a WW1 vet - for England. He was very sharp, drove til he was 95. Then his 71 year old son died of a heart attack, and the old man fell apart. One of the smartest guys I ever knew.

I feel fortunate to have sat and talked with the old timers I have known over the years. I have learned more from them than I could have from any school or books. It is amazing that there are still "links to the 1800s" still with us. My Grandma told me about camping in Yellowstone park in 1918 and also her school hack driver was a civil war vet!(She could never use that old line " I walked 15 miles to school everyday", she walked a few miles to a neighboring farm to meet everone else who rode into town on a wagon) It shows just how short life is that I knew someone who talked with a civil war vet! My great great aunt who was very old when I was 4 I remember. she was born in 1879 and went up Pikes peak on the new cog railroad in 1898 and wrote all about it in her journals and took pictures too!. I think the way they were raised did a lot for them in life and that "way" is rapidly disapearing. I really miss them all related or not.

There is man who lives over the hill and across the creek from me. I think he is 97. Went to see him a while back. He used to raise registerd herfords, horned of course. I got him talk"n bout bulls. He told me the name of the bull he sold my granddad in 61 or so. Had a picture of that bull"s dad on his wall next to the ones of his grand kids. He got to talk"n bout my mom"s 75 year old uncle who has had a few heart attacks the last year or so. Said "I knew there was som"tin wrong with that boy, he was help"n me a few years ago and could not dig more than 2 post holes with out sitt"n under the shade tree a while." All I can say is I hope I can have the quality of life he has had. Sold his cows when he was 94. Still takes care of the yard and bush hogs his farm, ran me off the road this summer. When you see a 1466 come"n down the road around here you get out of the way, front end on that thing ain"t as tight as it once was. :)

May your friend rest in peace.

Dave

My dad was born on a farm in Sweden in 1899 also. He passed away in 1966 from cancer. I think about him often and wish he could have made it to 2001 and have lived in three different centuries like this fine gentleman.

Phil;

Could you give the location? Maybe the water is good there and we could import some of it?

He sure had a great life. I had the pleasure of knowing the oldest active pilot a few years ago. He was Ralph Charles from Thornville, Ohio and owned and flew his own airplane till he broke his hip at age 102. He maintained his farm and had an airstrip he maintained and did the work on his own plane. Could read a newspaper without glasses and thought his 65 year old girlfriend was too old. He died at 104 in his sleep... Gene

I had a neighbor for a while, who's Dad had been a flight instructer in WW1. He lived in FL at the time, and was coming to see Tom the next month I was looking forward to that. He died before the time came, he was in his 90's.

It would be great to meet a guy who is that old and can still be coherent and here about the first cars, crank start of course, and the first world war and so on. My granddad is 87 now and is really an old buzzard with an attitude, not real interesting to talk to.

My Granddad died when he was 87, that was 38 years ago when I was 27. I wish I had asked him a lot of questions when I could have.
