Aug. 23-26 Our club helped with the Half Century of Progress Show in Rantoul, Illinois. It was a great sucess due to the fact we had a lot of field Demo. Picking corn, combining soybeans ,shelling corn, chopping stalks & moldboard plowing. So hang on to this old picker .Someone would appreciate having it . It is field demo's that make a sucessfull show . Not 300 restored tractors. We had a 48 horse hitch pulling a 32 ft disc. Once in a lifetime experience. Thanks for coming to our show and helping us eat those pulled pork sandwitches. Earl In Illinois

I have a feeling that a "good" woman isn't what needed so much as just "a" woman.

From the looks of the hornets nest he stirred up; I'd say more could use some of that service....either that or a little less service...

Ah yes, I remember the corn picking days well; The bite of the 30 degree air, complete with snow flurries, the smell of silk and corn chaff assaulting my nose, ears and eyes, climbing on and off to hook the wagon, spending a full day getting the tractor ready to mount the picker and then another day putting it on. Yesseree, those were the good old days. Jim

It was so cold riding those mounted pickers in Iowa, and it was hard to put on enough clothing and still be able to get on the picker. A "Heat Houser" was out of the question, so you had to just drive and tough it out. My uncle once said "It's such a cold job that for every cup of coffee I drink to get warm I have to get off the picker and relieve myself of three of them." The sting on your face from dirt blowing off the rear tires because of those strong fall/winter northern winds was so much fun. Sometimes the tractor would catch fire, and then the flames would drop down and the field was quickly blazing away, then you had to run like crazy (no cell phones then) to get to a phone and call the fire dept. by the time they got there the tractor/picker was totalled and lots of acres were lost. It was not uncommon in those days to see farmers without a thumb or a couple fingers missing because they thought they could unplug the picker before the machine grabbed them. Everytime I think I might want to drive a picker again in the upper midwest, I go lay down until the thought goes away.

The 2MH/2ME mounted corn pickers really were a fire hazard...today, they might have some antique value for demonstration purposes, but combining is simply more economical for most farmers. [In other words they LOSE less money that way than by tying up a tractor with a mounted picker.]

Put another way: Would YOU convert your combine to a two-row corn head? Me neither.

those d things are the ruination more tractors than you count. you have to keep things super clean to avoid a fire. then you have the added stress from weight on rear axles and bearings. pull type picker is user friendly if you have to is fast job to park picker and free up tractor for something else.

Mount that picker right on the front of that new Kubota you got coming. Outta be just fine since that picker was originally for a 40hp tractor. :')

Lanse: Why would anyone in right mind ever want a corn picker. Sure the picker looks like a decent idea, however every part of the operation that follows is labour intensive. Thankyou, but I'll combine any corn I have.

Picked corn is a bit like fire wood, add the labour and it's worthless. I used to sell fire wood in 8' lenghts. The buyers could buck it on site to length of their choice. One day a customer asked why I didn't burn wood if I had a 100 cords to sell every year. My responce, "I can't afford to burn it at the price I'm selling it for." I also had a banker for a customer, asked him one day if wood burning was economical for him. We all know bankers look only at dollars and cents, or so I thought. This banker surprised me, he stated on straight economics, he couldn't justify wood for fuel, however he needed exercise and be damned if he were going to make a fool of himself jogging through the neighborhood.

hey,

some people don't like to buy a combine only to use it once a year. Too much of an investment for a small time farmer or a farmer who is just getting started. I know of a lot of two row corn pickers around here, simply because they feel like taking the time in the field to do it.

Good market for ear corn here. Most cattle farmers here now buy theirs instead of having to fool with it, and maintain equipment. I sell nearly all mine on the cob. I need another picker like a hole in the head though.

George: I used to harvest mine as high moisture corn cob meal. Fed 60% of it blended with alfalfa haylage. I started off using a New Holland 890 forage harvester with two row picker head and recutter screens in the harvester, but found that to be rather slow, plus the 1066 was roaring along working very little

I switched to a 4 row combine and used the tractor and harvester as a stationary grinder-blower at the silo. Set the combine about same cylinder speed as for wheat, close the concave enough so it breaks the cobs and opened seives just a bit wider than grain corn. Hauled the broken cob and grain corn with self unloading silage wagons behind 656 and 560. One problem we encountered was bridging in the combine holding tank if we let it get full, thus we travelled the wagon alongside combine as soon as it returned. The corn I sold left the field directly from combine, and my customers did their own grinding. We liked the high moisture corn cob meal, made it much faster than grinding cobs at feeding time, and the product created less dust.

Prior to that I had only fed whole plant silage corn, thus I never had any experience with pickers. A neighbor did, and I can remember him digging cobs out of the crib at -20 to -30 F in Jan. I looked at that idea and building cribs wide enough for skid steer loader. Figured it would take quite a rugged crib to with stand the loader. Couple that with the fact my winter time dairy operation was very low labor. I milked and fed the 100 cows myself most winters. My summer time help went to harvest saw logs and pulpwood, my best cash crop. That labor situation during winter was probably my single biggest reason for going high moisture. I was able to use the combine for other grain as well. We had a great market for rye in those days, distillers were still making rye whisky out of rye, plus rye straw gave big volumes of bedding, very important with our long winters.

For as far away it is and fuel today it would be cheaper to obtain one locally. That is if you really want one. Used ones I've seen do not bring much anyways.

I've got no corn to pick, and even if I did, those pickers are are a real challenge to move unless they are mounted on a tractor.

Concerning a market for ear corn, here in SC there is a fair market for it for deer hunters who want to bait deer.

If I were growing some for my own use, I would grind the ear corn with some cottonseed meal for cattle feed.

You see ear corn advertised in the state sale paper often.
