Do You Tip Your Barber?

One of my closest friends is a stylist, and she was shocked that I don't tip my barber regularly. He charges $8 and sometimes I let him keep the change from a $10 bill, but only sometimes. It made me wonder if I've been wrong all those times to not tip him. We have a good barber/head of hair relationship. He knows my name and what's going on with me and how I like my hair cut. Is it customary to tip a barber or is it just a fancy stylist thing?

I do my own. Clip it as short as possible with a clipper. I haven't been to a barber in at least 20 years. Start doing the math, I've saved a bundle on barbers and shampoo over the years.

I'm getting in late but...

3 years ago bought my own clippers and just clip it every week or two about 1/16 of an inch. no need for barber anymore.

Prior to that, when I got a high and tight, flat on top... Yes I tipped. Ithink the barber was $12 bucks and I gave 15....

After going to a few places that somehow butcher a flatop, I wanted to keep the good barber happy.

My suggestion is that if you like the way you look tip. If you don't care how well your hair is cut, don't....Me I need all the help I can get...

I'm semi-retired and have my own AFLAC agency. My every-third-Tuesday at the barber shop is a congenial experience I look forward to. Yeah, you have the hunting, fishing and car talk, the jokes and stories about the stuff everyone's wives do but it is also about a bunch of guys getting a fair shot of commaraderie you get in few places (kinda like YT).

He cuts my flat top with care and does a good job which is harder than it looks, judging by the number of bad flat tops I've gotten over the years. He also gives me the senior citizen discount ($11 instead of $13). I tip two bucks. If he's decent enough to give me a break on the price, I'm decent enough to give it back.

In this world many of us fellas work pretty much alone all day. Aside from a little YT and maybe talk radio, the trip to the barber is one of the few chances we get to interact with our peers. Enjoy it, leave a tip and get back to work.

I tip, but they definatly work for it too. I go to a place called The Barbershop. It's a bunch of gal stylists who ONLY cut men's hair, and if a woman wants it done they charge something like $250 and donate it all to charity.

They cut however I want, shampoo, condition, get a hot towel, and they give you a quick shoulder massage while in the chair. They've also got TV's by every chair, and you can watch whatever you heart desires. Soaps? no problem. Cartoons? no problem. You get the remote. Basically it's a bunch of cute younger gals (mostly, there are is a corn fed girl once in a while) taking good care of you.

They only charge $10 for cash, $11 for credit card. I ussually leave $15, and go about once a month or maybe 2. No appointments needed either. If ya gotta wait, they've got nice leather chairs in the waiting area, with peanuts in a bucket and another empty one for the shells. If you make a mess (who doesn't w/ peanuts?) they grab a broom and swwep it up.

It's a win-win in my book.

yes I do.she charges me $8 and always gets it just like I like I dont even have to say anything except"yep the usual" I dont think a buck or 2 is a bad investment to see to my hairs wellbeing.she was out of town last time my hair started bothering me so I made the MISTAKE of going to one of these hairplaces with 3 little fatgirls and an airhead bimbo. half hour and $16 later my hair was butchered, so a buck or 2 to help keep her in business and happy is the least I can do

Barber shop I go to does not have a phone,never has.One of the old owners died of cancer other one too ailing to work.Two or three young fellas run the place now. Get the hair cut once a month only charge $8.00.The place is always packed everybody has a good time ,and they never rush through your haircut.Yea I tip $2.00 guess

No, my barber is 10 years younger than I, also owns one of the local carwash"s his wife is City Clerk. He charges $10 drives a new Ford diesel truck that he pulls his horse trailer to OK and TX to team roping events. One of my late Uncles retired from The old Lone Star Gas Co. in TX as Vice Pres. of Transmissions in 1976 after 40 years with Lone Star. Then moved back to Southwest MO on the part of the Family farm he inheirted. Larry was laughing one day as he told me Harry always tipped him, he said he is the only person that comes in here that does.

I used to. But I have so little hair now, I let my wife do it. She's a dog groomer, so she has lots of clippers and such. The only problem I have is getting down on all 4's hurts my knees.....

Nope. I understand tipping is part of the pay for table waiting, etc. So have to there.

But I tip proffessionals if & when they start tipping me for every meal I put on their table.... Charge a fair price for your trade, & leave it at that.

Did the math a few years ago when milk was 12 dollars cwt, and of course, that's before the farmer paid for shipping to the plant. Glass of milk- about 10-12 ounces, was about $1.25. If you leave a 15% tip, you just paid the waitress about $18 cwt. to carry that glass of milk to your table, while the farmer had to pay for the farm, the cows, the equipment, etc, and his family living expenses out of that $12. Isn't the basic job of a waitress to carry the food to your table? Do I tip- yes, but I figure the restaurant boss should pay his help enough when he charges eight bucks for a simple sandwich like a patty melt or a reuben, etc.

Used to go to a "stylist" and payed $15 for a hair cut that included blow drying and styling. I always tipped because the guy went out of his way to get my scheduled in around my work schedule, and he could have been doing some nice looking womans hair for $60 instead of mine for $15. I thought it was a fair to give a little extra for the good service. When that shop moved too far away I changed to a local barber and I still usually tip a dollar or two extra if I"ve got it. Where I go now it"s just two guys and the locals hanging out so I always enjoy the huntin", fishin", and farmin" talk. Some folks seem to think that being a barber is an uneducated form of work. Maybe they don"t have to go to class and learn advanced English and Trig but to get to be a licensed barber they do have to go to school. I"ve had mine cut/butchered once by someone that didn"t know what they were doing, so now I leave it to the professionals.

I have tipped my barber as long as I have been and adult and paid for the haircut. Of course, he retired at 50 and moved to the UP and I am still working

Don't use a barber, as wife cuts mine - wonder what I owe her after all these years. (Before tips that is!) But one thing I have noticed, I provide sound services at church for among other things, weddings and funerals. There is a charge in the contract for sound services for weddings, and I get a small check from the church treasurer. Also there is a charge listed in the fee list for funerals. I have never had a funeral director ever offer me any $, even as he would be handing out checks to the organist, soloists, etc. Out of dozens of funerals, only two families ever cared to thank me for my services.

An old classmate runs her own shop. She's trained and certified and all that, and I know her folks, she wasn't born with a silver spoon in her mouth. I may well be her only male customer, but she was one of my childhood crushes and she's still pretty good looking. And she's a single mom too. So I go for nostalgia reasons a couple times a year, I have her undivided for at least an hour and she washes, cuts, waxes my unibrow, gives a moderate head/shoulder massage and keeps sticking smelly stuff under my nose, I think she asks for about $41 but I never leave less than $60. She gets mildly annoyed by it but she hasn't refused the money yet. I have little doubt she'd give me the full manicure/pedicure for the same price if I were willing.

I've always heard as a rule of thumb, if your barber/stylist is the owner of the shop, you do not tip. If an employee of the establishment, you tip.

When I sell cattle I don't get a tip. When I bale hay I don't get a tip. When It's freezing rain and I have to sew up a prolapse I don't get a tip. When.....well you get the idea. It depends on the situation if I tip or not If my barber was on hard times or having a family crisis yes and then some, if I'm at a resturant and some snobby waiter with tatoos NO!!!!

Of course you tip them.

If you want a cheap job, buy some scissors (preferably the type you got in Kindergarten) and do the job yourself, or enlist the help of a drunken buddy.

Then you will have the look (and feel) of a real cheapskate.

Give the guy an extra couple bucks. You will be a better person for it.

Yep. This is why I bought that set of clippers for 50.00. Been cutting my own for two years now. Lets see - the average price was 11.00 each 3 weeks = 187.00 (plus tip) a year. Plus the time and gas.

I always tip my barber, like you I'm getting it done for under $10. including the tip. When I moved to this town, asked a couple of locals, where to find a barber. I further stated with my head of hair, good natured was as important as good barber. Both sent me to the same guy.

I haven't been disappointed, he is both good barber and good natured. We along with the the regulars have a barrel of fun every time I go there. My wife suggested she could cut my hair. I told the barber and further advised him I turned her down, just to much fun coming here. He responded, "where else could you go but here, spend $7. plus tip and have $100. worth of fun".

I am getting worried, my barber is as old as I am, his legs are bothering him. Would sure miss that bantering with the guys if he closed up shop. Second last time I was in, he suggested, he probably wouldn't retire any time soon, however he was concerned, his regulars would be coming in looking for a hair cut when he's stretched out at the funeral home.

Well guess what, he took a vacation, and I just had to have a hair cut while he was away. I went to a new shop up at the mall, maned by young folks charged me $14.40. After the regular guy got back, I went in suggested I could understand his concern of being asked to give someone a hair cut, while stretched out at the funeral home. I told him, I paid $14.40, and didn't have any fun. Folks, all I can say, if your getting done under $10., you best tip well.

I always noticed how the haircut was usually a buck or two under 10, or 15, or $20. They are fishing for that tip by pricing their cuts at 13 or $14. Forget that.
I grow mine out as long as I can and then just bite it off...

Most waiters and waitresses only make like $3 an hour for a starting wage, the rest is supposed to be made up in tips. If I was your waiter, I'd spit on your steak every time, or worse.

I tip. Not always very good, but if the service was good then I tip good. We had a waiter that the first time my fiance and I had him, he was horrible. We left a buck and some change for a tip off a bill that was $30. We had him a few months later, and man did his performance change. Left him a 5 that night for the same size bill.

If ya wanna tell your waiter/waitress they could do better, leave a couple pennies or a very small tip. If they did good, tip a little better. If you want spit in all your meals, keep doing what you're doing. I can gaurantee that you've had more than one meal with some extra sauce on them already. Hope you don't get the same waiter twice. Mainly for their sake.

Now if you don't like Minimum wage --- you go get an Education to better your wage -- you don't depend on begging for tips --- that's STUPID --- but then --- we do have MORE Stupid people walking around then smart ones...

Now just think of the Law Suit I could win when some stupid waiter/waitress put's their sauce on my meal -- I'm sure those folks in Wisconsin Restraints would make the News when that happens ...

I am my own barber. Been cutting my own hair for years. When I went to the barber shop I did tip. Mainly because when I was having a hard time making ends meet that barber alway gave me a big break when the boys and I would get our hair cut. He would whisper how much he wanted for the three of us. It would be my hair cut plus a buck for each of the boys. I gave extra as soon as I could because I knew he was helping other families also.

$13.50 for a 5 minute buzz job with a clipper is more than enough highway robbery without adding a tip.

Now, the guy back home in ND that does it for $5 always gets and extra buck for a tip.

Do you tip the gas station attendant for taking your money? Do you tip the cashier at Wally World when they do a good job? Do you tip your child"s teacher when they get straight A"s? Or improve their grades?

Tips are over-rated.

Yep. My barber charges $8.00 per haircut..I usually give him a $10.00 bill & tell him to keep the change! CC, who believes in keeping on the good side of folks that have razors in their hands!!

Nope, I figure the $11 they already charge for 10 to 12 mins of basically unskilled labor (around $50 to $60 per hour) is plentyyyyy . Its NOT like where a waitress is paid a pittnce n relies on tips which I do indeed leave PROVIDED the service warrants it

Absolutely not. His name is Don. He's a nice guy. Charges $13 and I see him every 3 weeks or so. I never need to tell him how to cut hair. He knows that I won't shop around and that I won't tip him. I hand him a $20 and he gives back all of my change. If he charged $9.25 or some such, I might tip him.
Waiters and waitresses are a whole different issue to me; I tip them very well.
I think it is also important to patronize a good business if you get good service. Even if the price is a little higher than the market.

I never gave it a thought. I go to an old friend who's a female stylist and also does men's haircuts.

She always just tells me how much to leave off at the desk on my way out, nowadays $9.00.

Tip them. Waiter, waitress, bartender, barber. It's how they make a good portion of their living. They end up having to pay income tax on what the Gov. thinks a customary tip would have been weather you tip them or not.

My barber is retired from a good job, works for the state 3 days a week and cuts hair 2 days a week. His little hair cut'n gig ain't hurt'n him on taxes none. His shop is paid for and he has little expences. He charges $8 for a hair cut, does 4 an hour. $32/hour CASH ain't bad money round here.

My wife always says to tip haircut, waiteress, etc. I personally dont believe in it. i say we pay a decent price for a haircut, meal, service or whatever. I believe that the employer should be paying their people, not me! I also could never figure out tipping a percentage, if i order steak at $20.00 or a fish sandwich for $6.00 the person did just as much work for the fish as the steak. i say employers pay your people.

I don't tip them. They provide a service for a fee. I pay the fee and I leave.

It would be like driving to the ford dealer and having your oil changed then feeling you have to tip the mechanic. No Way!

You say, "It would be like going to a Ford dealer...etc". If I am in a bind (and I have had some problems while on the road) and I get good service from a technician, I will indeed tip them. It all depends on their attitude and competence, for sure.

I have two children, one 43 and one almost 40 (although she won't admit it). They have both worked at jobs where they were paid minimum wage (or less) and both of them got good tips because they cared about the customer and gave good service.

Sure there are Exceptions. I Did a lot of road service years ago. People will show there appreciation.

But the Quick lube bay at the dealer I don't think warrants a tip.

The girl I lived with many years ago worked hard for her tips as a waitress. Was a OK gig for a long time.

A 10-12 dollar hair cut for short of 15 minutes of work. I think that is plenty.

A 3 hour beauty shop hair overhaul could warrant appreciation in the form of a tip.

I agree with you in that it depends on the attitude and situation.

Proportional to the quality and attention if pretty bad, nothing and talk to the boss, at a normal okey dokey service 10%. if treated as a regular and well 15%+ up to 20% for well done effort. JimN My wife educated me on this issue!

I think you should tip him. I am fortunate that I just shave my head so I have a wife that helps but... If I went to the barber I would tip him/her. I know that my wife tips the woman that cuts and does her hair. But I always try to tip just about anyone thats doing a service. I always tip waitresses and bartenders. Hey I am a mechanic and once in a while I get a tip. So I know that if I am worthy of a tip just about anybody is worthy.

I used to tip my old barber before he retired but the new barber charges 11.00 for a flattop that gets cut every two to three weeks so he is getting enough of my money.
