before you all get down on sports personalities, you should look into your congressmen's retirements and medical benefits.

 I got this joke in an email, by the way. in reply to Gary in TX, 09-05-2007 21:53:52
Perfect timing to insert my joke:

In 1923, Who Was:
>>> >> >>
>>> >> >> 1. President of the largest steel company?
>>> >> >>
>>> >> >> 2. President of the largest gas company?
>>> >> >>
>>> >> >> 3. President of the New York Stock Exchange?
>>> >> >>
>>> >> >> 4. Greatest wheat speculator?
>>> >> >>
>>> >> >> 5. President of the Bank of International
>>> >> Settlement?
>>> >> >>
>>> >> >> 6. Great Bear of Wall Street?

These men

Were considered some of the worlds most successful

Of their days.

Now,

80 years later,

The history book asks us,

If we know What ultimately became of them.

The Answers: 1. The president of the largest steel company.

Charles Schwab,

Died a pauper.

2. The president of the largest gas company,

Edward Hopson,

Went insane.

3. The president of the NYSE,

Richard Whitney,

Was released from prison

To die at home.

4. The greatest wheat speculator,

Arthur Cooger,

Died abroad, penniless.

5. The president of

The Bank of International Settlement,

Shot himself.

6. The Great Bear of Wall Street,

Cosabee Livermore,

Also committed suicide.

However:

In that same year,

1923,

The PGA Champion

And

The winner of

The

Most important golf tournament,

The US Open,

Was

Gene Sarazen.

What became of him?

He played golf until he was 92,

Died in 1999 at the age of 95.

He was financially secure

At the time of his death.

The Moral:

>>> >> >> Screw work.
>>> >> >> Play golf.

You can "vote" with your dollars. Don't attend any games. Don't buy endorsed products. Don't buy the stuff advertised on TV. Don't live in Arlington Texas or you will have to help pay for Jerry Jones new stadium. I wouldn't give Jerry Jones a sandwich if he was starving, let alone help pay for his new Cowboy stadium.Tom

First off sports hero worship is a problem for kids who think that if they buy the endorsed products and mimick the attitude then they are SOMEBODY. However, let em make what they can. the average football career is only paying for 4 yrs. Then it's over and so is your physical well being. Look how so many of them end up in trouble and misery. I don't envy that - the money is only as good as the way you spend it. Alot of the people on this site are richer in ways that these atheletes will never have or know. Try to enjoy the game. Go Angels.

Well at least he's not into steroids, gambling, dogfighting etc., Having said that, I would never pay to see any pro sport. They make WAAAAY too much money. All the dolts who spend all their money worshiping their sports idols are to blame.

While a 1 Billion dollar retirement fund seems pretty outrageous, I don't really have a problem with it. If you have a marketable talent and are among the very best at what you do, you should be able to make as much money as the market allows you to. Just think of the other people making money off his back. At least he works hard at it. Look at the guy who used to run Home Depot, he lost money for the company but still got 1/4 of a billion just for leaving. Now he runs Chrysler.

Don't blame the sports figures if someone wanted to pay me to play checkers I'd be more than happy to take their money.The reason these folks make what they do is the American public with their $$$ decides what is 'important' anymore by buying tickets to events and products these folks advertise.Misplaced values in my opinion but it is a free country so far and people can spend their $$$$ as they choose.

BTW I noticed that Roman Abramowich (s?) ordered a new Airbus 380. Maybe I"ll get a chance at his Boeing 767 lol.

Gary, I am on your side. I served this country and was wounded. They can keep that damn Purple Heart. I have to work my hind end off just to keep the wolf away. When I think I am gaining ground the wolf has pups. I use to be a die hard baseball fan. when they had that strike, I was sick over it. If I could play ball for 3 or 400,000 I would sing in the streets. When they can do what I do and live on it, I may have some sympathy for them.

Well if you played golf all day every day for almost all of your life just to be the best don't you think that you should be worth that much.

The key word here is "played" and the answer is No.

Part of the sickness that is rotting this country is "hero" worship of sports figures who contribute absolutely nothing to society.

My opinion, don't bother to flame me.

I think it is ridiculous what those folks make too but let's look at it this way. If you are willing to pay $70+ for a ticket to watch a game. $5 for a soda or $9 for a beer while there, Then whatever inflated price you have to pay for a shirt or cap then it's not their fault. Personally I think I would enjoy make a few million a year to work in the machine shop that I do, I sure wouldn't turn it down. However the customer (Or fans in sports case) won't pay that price so I don't make that much.

If the fans will quit going to the games and paying those ridiculous prices then the owners can't afford to pay the players and they won't make as much.
