the local gas station sells 10w-30 motor oil for diesals at less then the cheap stuff at the auto parts store. Can I use it in a small, gas engine?

As long as the small gas engine does not have a cat converter,( I dont think any do unless it is in a small car or pickup), then the diesel oil is actually better for your engine. Most Gasoline only oils (API S rating) no longer have the zink phosphate additive that is necessary for long life of a flat tappet cam/lifters. Modern car engines no longer use flat tappet cams/lifters, so they removed the additive because it damages cat converters at very high mileage. Diesel oil(API C rating) still contains the zinc phosphate additive, so it better protects older or lawn & garden type small engines from cam/lifter wear.

Read the can. If it is aproved for gas engines it will have a SAE code of S something like SL. (Spark engine) If it is approved for a diesel it will have a C code. (Compression engine)

Yes, but Read the specs on the can. I am with Rob, these newer cars are special in what they want, so be carefull there.

Whats the brand? I imagine you can use it in a gas engine, but I certainly wouldn't put it in anything that is younger than 5 years old!!
