My neighbor told me to add a quart of diesel fuel to about every 15 gallons of unleaded gas for old tractors, Mine is a 1951 Minneapolis moline uts, He said that when I get it running to add it to mine sa it does not hurt the valves.

Whatever the gas man brings us. I'm sure it's the exact same thing as you find at the pump, just no state sales tax.

I have a JD 1020 and MF 135 Both have 3 cly gas engines. They were both bought new by my father inlaw and my Dad respectively. They were not used a whole lot and after a couple years they both had to be overhauled. Mostly head work. Maybe just bad luck but sure is strange. I will say that they are both ok now and run well on unleaded.

When they first made us use unleaded they said we had yto put in an additive to the gas. I asked our bulk man about this and he said if we added the same amount of regular motor oil to our gas it would do the same thing. Our M's ran for years without any additives and had no valve problems.

They didn't add lead to gasoline until Ford and GM developed V8 engines.

MOST of the 'old' tractors burned Tractor fuel! (similar to kerosene)

They would start them on gas and then switch over to the fuel. That is, if you owned one of the MANY all-fuel tractors at the time.

I've never seen any tractor engine go bad because of unleaded. But I will say this though. When I used to run my F-12 all the time it didn't like unleaded. I don't know if it's just in my head or coincedece(sp) or what, but it would start running rough. As soon as I put lead additive in it, it ran like a dream and cleared up. Doug N

Depends on what you mean by "old." Prewar (WW II) tractors burned no lead because lead hadn't yet been introduced.

All of mine run just fine on un-leaded E-10. Nothing else is available around here.
