the motor on my 1550 was stuck i got it free but when i taped the one sleevedown i chiped the out side edge about 3/8'' will this work or must i replace the sleeve brian

They are WET sleeves. Many people say you should replace the oring at the bottem, if the sleeve gets raised up,or it will leak. The sleeve has to seal water top and bottem and compression too against the head gasket.

Giving only one dimension leaves rather too much to the imagination.
If it is slight damage to the very outside edge for a cm or more (people usually underestimate in these cases), that may not be too important.
If it is the complete outside edge that is broken away, that is another case altogether.
The fire ring on the gasket must be clamped correctly and there must be no risk of crack propagation. Without at least some pictures, my gut feeling is renew, but it may have a better chance of success as it is a gas engine.
