GAUGE PROBLEM

i recently bought a 2140 JD cab tractor, which is basically the same as a 2950. The temp gauge and fuel gauge doesn't work and i would at least like to get the temp gauge working so i'll know how cool its running. A mechanic told me to unhook the wire off the top of the head and ground it and if the gauge goes to red the unit in the head if bad, well i did that and the gauge never moved, so i'm wondering what to check next. I think it has the circuit board under the dash but other stuff works on that board.

The mechanic told you correctly- Grounding the wire should peg the needle- if it did, replace the sender. Since it did not, replace the gauge.

well i messed around in there today (jiggled wires around) and got the gauge to do something, it would come up about 1/3 of the way and thats it, the fuel gauge would go all the way to full, which i think the sending unit is bad with it, but with the gauge doing this, it is bad i guess? as much as JD wants for it, i wanna be 100% sure

Use a meter to determine if there is power getting to the gauge, if not jump it to see if the gauge will work.
