Pops a few times then quits

Hello,
My 1948 Silver King needs some help. Two years ago, it ran fine before I started tearing it apart for restoration. I did very little to the motor, only adjusting valves, and checking everything else. Now, I have everything back together but the engine won't run. It will pop a few times and then quit. I have checked the timing, disassembled and checked the carb twice and still have the same problem. I have about 75 pounds of compression (it had 115 when hot last time I checked it before restoration). With the way it wants to run, then quits I keep coming back to the carb. I have tried adjusting the main screw and the idle air screw but nothing seems to help. Could I have the valves adjusted bad? Would this cause the engine to fire a few times and then quit. Also, I have all new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and coil. Each plug sparks with a nice blue spark. Let me know what you guys think, I have a show coming up I would like to take it to but not if it won't start.
Thank you,
Jason

I have checked and rechecked the plug wires, even used my thumb to make sure I was getting spark during compression. I have added oil to the cylinders and that did not raise compression any. The only time I have written down the compression was after it had ran for a while and the engine was warmed up and they were all around 120 or 125. Could a cold engine be that much worse (I am only getting 75 now)? Also, if I did not have enough compression to run, why does it pop for 4 or 5 seconds and then quit. I will check the valves again tomorrow and will recheck the carb and carb settings. After that, I just may have to take it to the Corn Festival in Wilmington and have my uncle in law help me out.

I know very little about a Silver King, but an engine is an engine. If you had 115 pounds of compression before, and only 75 pounds now, I'd say you need to go back to the drawing board on the valve clearances adjustments.

There are a lot of possibilities as to why it won't run so I won't try to make any guesses. But about that show that is coming up. If you haven't got it figured out by then you should still consider taking it to the show. I'll bet there will be a wealth of knowledge there to help you get it running.

compression seems a little low. try squirting some engine oil in each cylinder, maybe a 3-4 pumps from an oil can. turn the motor over a few times to get the rings good and wet. put the plugs back in, give er a quick shot of ether and see if she starts. if the valves are adjusted a little too tight, they could be staying open just a hair. but i'm thinking the oil wll get er going.
