International Farmall H Starter

I have an IH I-U4 Power Unit, which utilizes the same engine as a Farmall H. The starter, however, is mounted on the forward side of the bell housing, as opposed to on the rear side of the bell housing as on the "H". So, the starter for the I-U4 needs to turn counter-clockwise (CCW). QUESTION: Is there a way to make the "H" starter which turns clockwise, turn CCW? Can you reverse polarity (will the centrifugal gear still engage)? Thanks,

You may also find the starter ring gear on the flywheel is different. Teeth may be slightly bevelled on the 'front' edge to allow easy engagement/disengagement.
Brushes in starter may be OK for reverse direction, but brush-holders may have been designed for one way operation. Obvious problem with bendix. You may well find the flywheel has the ring gear installed from the other side or is just a completely different part number. All ways round, you need to check the parts book carefully before doing anything. Try the International forum as there will likely be someone who has come across this problem before.

As Jim describes below you must swap the starter's internal field connections in order to reverse starter rotation.

Also you must replace the bendix (the drive pinion assembly) with one for the opposite rotation. The original starter drive will not engage after the starter's rotation has been reversed.

If you """need""" to make it work, reversing the leads going to the field coils will do it. It takes big connections, and good solder and care to miss all internal parts that could short out. JimN

Reverse polarity will not reverse the direction of the starter.

Probably cheaper and easier to just exchange the starter you have for a rebuilt starter in the type you need.

Made the mistake of trying something like that one time. Forgot the starter mounted from the rear on an H and M. The bolt pattern was the same as an Oliver 77. Put it in and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't start until I realized it was turning backwards.
