I own a Troy-Bilt lawn tractor purchased in 2003. Trans went out in '05 and was replaced under warranty. Like clockwork, I was mowing this morning and transmission went out again. Mower is out af warranty, MTD wants $430 for a replacement. I am just wondering if anybody has been inside on of these. I anticipate spending the cash for the part, but if there is some hope of another option I will certainly entertain it.

Thanks,

Kirk

I replaced the mtd transaxle in mine for $350.00. Mine blew apart and busted the housing. Get you an exploded diagram to go by. They don't look to complicated.

While I wouldn't know one end of one of these from the other, my GM mechanic friend asked me to look on the Net for him after his FIL's died. It was a Sears, I think. The solution (which worked) I found on a Craftsman discussion group. One guy suggested tipping the transmission over and letting the air bubbles clear out of the transmission. I printed the page, read it to him and a day later the tranny was fine. That was several years ago.

Try Google.

The dudes in Garden tractors board could help ya-mabey.

I would look for a new mower, but thats just me. You could get a nice used one for $430. I got a snapper for $100 a few **ehem*** problems.

Seroiusly, you could also find out if you could find a used one and fit it to your mower.

Take it apart. They are really a simple trans. Probably got a coupler or some such thing as a broken key. If it just quit and wasn't giving any problems, will more than likely be an easy fix.

Dave
P.S. Also, if it has a release so that it can be moved not running, check it first.
