Before retiring from the business I raised Charolais/Bison cross. Big beefy critters and absolutely the best eating. Pretty even tempered beasts. I really enjoyed them. If I was 20 years younger I'd do it again.

Like RN was saying what do you have for fences or how many acres per animal do you have to have to keep them happy and in the fence? How much does one of those bison cows cost anyways? I have been raising dairy steers cause we like the meat better than the famed angus but I would consider trying some buffalo too.

WE run 6 strands of hi tensil(sp?) strength wire... 4 with power and bottom and top without.. We use treated posts from the outfit in minnesota

We have used woven wire but find without a electric wire about 1 to 2 feet of the ground the animals just stick thier head and horns in the fence and just push and mow on the outside of your woven fence really nice

But even with both of these two styles of fences they still find a way to get out.. I dont care what type of fence you have they are wild animals..

By the sound of your post, you either don't know didly squat about bison or you don't feed them but dirt.
in the 11 years i have had bison, i never had them going trough the fence yet. If they are happy where they are they will never leave you.
they are easyer on a fence than beef.
I run a 5' high page wire fence with posts 21' apart. I have had a 100+ feet strech of fence down by trees after a storm, they could have walked right out, none did but i could see they had been there.

If you use high tensile, put power on #6,4,2 and ground the rest. dry ground does not ground well
You have to train them in a corral to the juice.

By the sounds of your post you are a know it all a@@hole.. We know lots about bison.. What do you expect to happen when another animal gores one by the fence and they get through the hi tensil fence..

You just think you are so cool rasing 200 bison.. Yipee.. I give you a reward

Well well ,can't take critic very well eh.
I have to admit i was a kind of rude, I apologize for that. But on the other hand your reply ain't that nice either.
I never said I know it all,far from that .
you said you can't keep them inside the fence, cause they grazed trough it. you did not mention there was a fight that caused it.

beside that jealousy is a bad vice man, get over it. ted turner has 48.000 of these critters, i am small fry compared to that.
you put your numbers down, i did mine. yoopy do.

you started the tread, i just replied.

Couple places in Green County, Wi I used to pass by. Thought they had the only decent fences in the area. Point to make is that fences need to be a little stronger than dairy fences common in s. central Wisconsin, 3 strands barbed wire and 1 electric strand don't seem like it would keep in a large critter- it didn't keep in cousins' Brown Swiss pet. RN.

There's a semi-hippy/healthy restaurant near me that I go to once every week or so and almost always get the bison burger. Keep meaning to ask the waitress where exactly they get their meat from- I love it. Actually wondered to myself if we could raise a few on our land in upstate NY- this thread has me thinking I need to do more research into it! I've assumed, but don't know if it is correct, that all bison must be 'free range'- seems like they're too 'wild' to work in a CAFO.

I have a herd of 200+,been raising them since 96. been in dairy and beef for 30 years before that, Bison beats them all by a country mile as far as the workload and the cost of keeping goes. no calving troubles,no vet cost other than deworming, cheaper feeding, graze all winter if you have the pasture or you can winter feed them once a day or for a month or more with no waste, and go on vacation. They won't overload on grain either, altough i can't figger out wy anyone would want to grain them to start with.no bedding needed,no branding, dehorning or castrating, easy handling if you know what you are doing.with the right setup 1 guy can bring them in and do all the sorting by himself without yelling and hollering.
I can't believe that not more people are raising them. The meat is superb, but most people dont know how to cook it properly. rare to medium rare. if you like your meat done, eat beef instead.
The only thing that needs to change is the UTM rule with the BSE bullshit[politician IDIOTS]

Sorry for the long post. It might change some peoples mind about these magnificient animals.

Ten to twelve years ago a friend of mine who had two beef cow herds, eighty head each, one spring calving the other fall calving. He was always on top of things trying different methods. He stated he wanted to try one more thing before he retired and that was bison. He developed a herd of forty cows and liked the experiment. It all ended when his health deteriorated and he got out of the business for that reason. My take is that his major regret was that the price of the bison was much higher when he got in than when he got out. He liked the ease of calving, 40 pound calves. My understanding is that the cows can be expected to produce until they are 35 years old. Bison will eat feed such as old hay that beef will not.

The bison meat that I have eaten was juicier than beef and I liked it better. A veterinarian friend of mine pointed out that the area of beef cattle that the prime cuts come from, do not have the ample amount of meat on them in the bison, that the cattle have.

I think cows can produce up to 19 years old.. I think i heard thats the life span.. They have a pretty easy time calving.. We had one with a prolapse from birthing..The vet said that it is very very rare.. Had to knock it down and bottle feed the little guy.. Sure was fun feeding a buffalo calf.. Not to many people can say they did that

Tried it didn't care for it stringy and tough and twice as expensive as beef. Probably make good burger or stew meat.

You got a tough batch. Lots of beef is the same way. I don't raise them, but a friend of mine does and I have eaten it many times and is just as good as beef in my opinion.

I agree --- it just isn't readily available in my area, over the internet or through some speciality stores, which makes the cost high. My one batch is certainly not indicative of what all bison meat is like.

There are numerous producers in our area. In the right environment (lots of cheap land imho) they CAN be raised economically, but so can beef. Having eaten some, I wouldn't pay more than I would for beef. BUT if the market is there, have at it! Heck some people buy pumpkins!
