i am restoring my 1958 bolens for work but it seems to loose power after a half hour. I don't know much about engines but i think it has something to do with the piston on this Kohler 160 not staying sealed when hot. I'm probably wrong

You sir have one well burnt exhaust valve. Take off the head and remove the valve, lap the seat, (they are hardened and will not require grinding). Put in a new exhaust valve and you will be good to go. You can also lap the intake valve but they are usually still pretty good. Set the valve clearences and you will be good to go. Good luck

When it quits running pull the plug wire off the sparkplug and hold it away from the sparkplug while someone makes an attempt to start the engine. You may have a weak coil. Try a new plug too. Hal

Check the valve clearances. The valve stem grows at a faster rate than the block, decreasing valve lash when the engine heats up. I am not sure what they should be because you gave no model # or any other specific info.

Find a manual or go to a small engine shop and ask for the valve lash settings for your engine.

This is a common problem on older K series engines.

I think if it were related to the piston/rings/cylinder it would be noticeable before half an hour of running time. I'd suspect something that heats up more slowly, likely suspect to me would be the ignition coil.

After a few years of use the valve and valve seat wear and sink down into the seat causeing little or no clearance on the exhaust valve. And then when it gets run for a while and heat in the valve it doesnt seat and looses power. I think Kolher may have adjustable valves. Maybe the link can help you.
