I've got a Toro 16-38HXL riding mower. 16 HP Briggs and Stratton engine. Yesterday, after mowing with it for about 10 minutes, it started sputtering and bogging down. If I shut off the mower deck, it got a little better, but then started sputtering again. I could keep it running a little more by backing out of the throttle a little ways, but it still sputters and bogs down.

I shut it off ofr about 5 minutes to look the engine over. After waiting, it would start right up and run fine, but would soon start bogging down again.

I changed the fuel filter. The fuel lines all look to be in good shape. The gas is fresh. I checked all of the linkages on the carb, and everything appears to be tight. The spark plug was new at the beginning of the year.

Any ideas? I'm kind of stumped on this one, and I'd rather not have to take it down to the Toro dealer.

Check your gas cap or check your air filter and see if the air filter is plugged and filled with oil. If you have an OHV engine, it could have a blown head gasket, and pumping oil into the air filter and the air filter is partially plugged up.

Try running with the gas cap slightly loose. Gas tank may not be breathing.
