I have a John Deere M and am replacing the pistons, among other things. I am wondering if anyone knows of a tool that helps to install rings on the piston. I would appreciate any and all related info on this. Also, my new pistons have no markings which indicate front or back. Does it matter which they go? Has anyone had any experience with these before? Thanks for the help. Bob

What piston to wall clearance are you planning to use? What piston ring composition and end gap? Do you have a medium to heavy load to break the engine in with? The distributer bushing should replaced while the engine is apart. The cam & followers should be resurfaced. Wear which can cause uneven operation. Can't even be seen just eye balling the cam. May as well mill the deck and head surfaces to gain some compression. Those M's were so low they could almost burn Coleman lantern fuel

OH yeah, they'll have that piston ring tool at NAPA or any other ruputable parts store.

Your pistons should have come with directions- i'm quite sure that there is a way they have to go in... contact your supplier.
