We have used a complete mix (15 15 15 etc) poultry and cow manure are not available. I am not getting a good second cutting on these fields. What about a high nitrogen? and what about folier feed? Soil test put ph as ok and did say add nitrogen. since they are old fields we are building and plowing/seeding some each year.

With many years of experience growing grass for hay, I have found what works best for me. N-P-K applied before/at green-up in early spring. More pounds per acre of N than P and K. Additional N after first cutting in early May. Second cutting in late June (dependent upon rainfall received). If good second cutting additional small amount of N is applied. Make third cutting ( again dependent on rainfall received ) late August. Another application of N ( and possibly some P and K)for the good growth of grasses usually seen in the cooler weather of September and October. Make last cutting during the fine sunny days of mid/late October and even early November. If your regrowth from first cutting grass is weak looking or yellow/green it needs Nitrogen. N makes grass GREEN. !!!

Where are you at that you can cut grass hay in early May or 3 or 4 times a year? Here in Ky we do good to get two cutting of grass with the first one in late may or early June. Urea is very good for grass.

I am in northwestern North Carolina,( Stokes County ) about 25 miles south of NC/VA state line and about 30 miles southeast of the Blue Ridge Mountains. I can get four cuttings from mixture of fescue, orchard grass and ryegrass with some summer annual weed grass species (crabgrass, barnyard, foxtail, panicum, and others, etc) filling in bare or thin spots by the late August cutting. Then good growth of fescue and orchard grass returning in cooler fall days. Granted, the August cutting can be light but you are better off mowing then and clipping any weeds before they make seed.
Of course, four cuttings require PLENTY of rain. This year there has been very little since winter. First cutting is all that anyone around here made. And it was only about 60 % of normal.
Hay is in very short supply here. I hope we get a couple of hurricane/tropical storm systems---AND SOON.

What type of hay are you trying to grow?If moisture has not been problem you probably need a soil test for a starting point. If you have alfalfa you may need to spray second cutting for potato leaf hopper. Lots of lost yield in my area because of leaf hopper damage an lack of spraying.
