I'm not getting any movement on the water temperature gauge on my JD 2240. Is there a way of checking the gauge? Or is the gauge and water temp. sensor one complete unit?

You can view the JD parts catalog for your tractor anytime online. You'll have to register with a local dealer and sign in though to price parts online.

Very simple just take temp reading with the radiator cap off. This will tell you the temp of the coolant.

If there's an insulated copper wire from the gauge to the sender and an insulated copper wire (for other than a light) to the gauge for power then its elecctrical and two pieces. If there's a capillary tube from the gauge to the sender location, its one piece. Either can be checked with a cup of boiling water. You will have to add a ground wire to the sender of the electrical gauge after removing it from the engine.
