My first day there was June 22, 1962. 'Course I don't remember any of it because that's the day I was born at the base hospital. Dad was transferred to Lockbourne AFB (later Rickenbacker) about 9 mo. later so I don't have any recollection about the place. One of these days though...

Brings back memories for me too. I was at Chanute AFB from Aug. 1951 to May 1953. Spent most of my time at Air Installations. Speaking of blizzards, as I remember it (though that is a long time ago) we would occasionally on request help out the highway department with our SnoGos when the drifts got too bad. One time a detail was planting trees on the west side of the base using a 36 inch tractor auger with it dawned on somebody that they were digging right over a 700 pair phone cable! Did not cut it, fortunately.

They changed that classification # after you left sometime, I was there and did the same thing in 1973, it was 43131E, then, never did get to mess around much with KC-135, but spent a boat load of time messing with B-52s, ended up at Wright Pat, it was the last choice on my dream sheet.

The fields have got to be very wet. I believe it is at the old Chanute AFB so should be plenty of hard surface parking.

Chanute AFB; Rantoul Ill.
Now that sure brings back memories from years past. I spent the summer of 1977 studing auto mechanics at that base.
I also remember going to some joint in Urbana-Champaign and drinking 3.5 beer because I was not old enough to drink the harder stuff. Never even heard of 3.5 beer before that time.
Saw more corn that summer than I have ever seen before or since. Was quite a change for a boy from the deep south.

I spent the last 3 months of that year in jet engine mechanics school there. The day I left it was near blizzard conditions. That place was the coldest I'd ever been in my young life. Never could understand why anyone wanted to abuse themselves living in conditions like that.(%^) 1 day it was -52* wind chill. I could feel the hair in my nose freeze every time I inhaled. DON TX

I spent my tech school at Chanute also, you thought Rantoul was cold? Maybe you shoulda went TDY to Why Not, Minot, you would have found what true cold was there. When I did my basic training in Lackland AFB, it was spitting snow, and 19 degrees when we got on base, kinda cold for South Texas.
