As you stop the tractor and let it idle to smooth temps foe 30 seconds or so, put it in road gear and hold the brakes, then let out the clutch as you shut off the ign. Stops the engine rapidly and has less chance to fire one over your fedora. JimN

Every revolution it turns after you turn the ignition off it still sucks in some fuel mixture. When an engine is first shut off it will actually increase in temperature for a period before it starts to cool off. That increase in temp will vaporize any fuel still in the cylinders and eventually ignite it. If your idle is high it will turn a lot of times before it stops , more fuel. Make sure throttle plate is completely closed. Don't use fuel that has 10% alchahol in it. (Sunoco etc). As soon as it stops completely , try opening the throttle up to let the fuel vapor escape before it explodes.

My Briggs in my Lawn tractor does that once in while not as much now as when new. They tell its the lean carb settings and since they are permanent setting nothing can be done.

You might set your idle jet just a little richer and then let it idle a bit before shutting down. leaner will cause it to backfire more.

My 10 and a half horse Briggs on my lawn mower will do it every time. It run quite hot (muffler) and about 10 seconds after shut off will wake the whole block. I idle it for a while but it still does it..maybe idle is too rich?

I have that problem if I just run the gas units in and shut them off if I idle them back for a minute or two to cool off and burn any excess fuel in the manifold they seem to shut down fine.
