H Man, Im like many of the otehrs, Id "convert" it by the use of 00 Gauge Battery n Starter n Ground cables,,,,, the absolute biggest heaviest highest CCA or Amp/Hr reated batetry that will physically stuff into the battery compartment,,,,, ,,,,give it a good tune up,,,, N LEAVE IT 6 VOLTS !!!!!

However its your tractor n your choice and Bob M's diagrams will show ya how to wire it. If its a coil ignition you can EITHER keep the old 6 volt coil but add an external series voltage dropping (12 to 6) ballast resistor afetr the ignition switch n before the coil OR ELSE use a full true 12 volt coil no ballast rerquired,,,,,change any lights to 12 volts,,,,, ,get a 12 volt genny n voltage regulator,,,,, ,,

What are you going to do with the old generator? I could use on to rebuild for my M.

Get it tuned up and leave it 6 volt. They're worth a lot more 6 volt. Also , 12 volt will burn your starter out after a while or it did mine , and you have to change your lights to 12 volt.Changing over will cost you about 100 dollars, wire, alternator and battery and usually new battery cables.I've switched about 4 Farmalls over for people , 2 for myself and wished I'd never done mine.It hurts the value of the tractor if you decide to sell it.

Just a question (which doesn't help you in your coversion). Why do you feel it necessary to convert to a 12 volt system?

I don't know why it would hurt the value if it is done right. I had the generator on my H converted to 12 volts. and you can't tell unless you take off the cover and look at the battery. I don't go for the alternator conversions. ou have to change the fields in the generator and get a 12 volt regulator. And don't need to change any wiring.

I have bought and restored about eight Farmalls. I changed 2 that I had from 6 to 12 volt. When I tried to sell them ,the people ask me if they were still 6 volt and when I told then they had been converted to 12 ,they would tell me they weren't interested. It may not matter if you plan to keep it but it does hurt the sales if you plan to sell it.I have a Farmall A now that I bought and I left it 6 volt and has never failed to start.Keep it tuned up and it will be ok.

If you figure the cost of a 1 wire alternator, a battery, and then the time to fab a bracket I suspect you'd have $75 - $100 in parts unless you just happen to have this stuff around from another project. Thats not considering replacement of bulbs for your lights.

If your going to keep the "original" look your probably going to spend much more converting everything over unless you need a generator overhaul anyway. The voltage regulator will set you back $45 to $60. I'm not sure what the conversion from 6v - 12v is for a generator. Then you still have the battery cost. Lets estimate $150 to keep the original look, but it's probably more.

Now, if you want to go to 12v, because you can"t stand the "unreliable" or slow cranking nature of things when trying to start the tractor your problem can probably be solved without making the conversion.

REPLACE all 3 of your battery / starter cables with 00 or 1 guage. Anything smaller and you will not get the current necessary to make things spin fast.

I just redid my Farmall H, the cables cost between $15 and $20, depending on the length. My generator was still good (brushes ok etc) and I replaced my voltage regulator ($46 at TSC) as I was not showing a charge. I rewired the tractor and put in 3 new lamps while I was at it since I was dong everything else.

I have approx $120 in refabricating / repairing the entire electrical system. My H cranks and starts just as good as if I had a 12v system. I didn't have to hack my hood or fabricate anything to make it work.

I suppose it's all relative to what you want to spend... I think it will cost atleast that to convert to 12v from scratch. Other than a "personal preference" I see no reason myself.
