What type of boards work best and last the longest for a board fence? I was considering treated, but they are sorta pricy. I have poplar and oak trees on my place, but I don"t want to have to do this more than once. Thanks in advance!

In my experience, if you are building the fence to hold cattle or fence off fields, use oak. If the boards are going to be up in your face, like fencing the yard around the house, use poplar. Oak gets real grainey when it dries and horses like to gnaw on it when their diet lacks certain minerals. Oak will have a tendency to warp and twist slightly over time, where poplar will not. I have noticed that oak will get so hard over time that you have to drill a pilot to get a nail into it. If I am not mistaken, poplar is slightly less expensive that oak. We get 1"X6"X16' oak boards here for $5 each.

Can you find a wood stave silo somewhere nearby? Probably not but if you can, free up the turnbuckles (long ladder, start at the top with PB Blaster or liquid wrench, work down) one day. Go back the next day with wagon and tractor. Tie a cable or strap to top of silo. Loosen all the turnbuckles from the top down. Hook strap onto tractor. Pull the silo over. Load staves onto wagon. Best fence boards in the world. Usually free, too.

Lots of board fences around me and almost all looks pretty rough after about 5 years.PVC 'boards' look like they will last a very long time

Apitong would cost a fortune for fencing,it is a tropical oak used in severe service trailer floors.Use white oak in 16' lengths.

I agree white oak is best but make sure there is no sap wood on the boards.Sap wood will rot off quickly.

I would use the heartwood of white oak. Spray it once a year when it is hot and dry with diesel.

I put up a red oak board fence about 30 years ago. I did not paint it. It is still standing and there is no rot. I was advised when I was installing the fence not to paint it, that unpainted oak would last for ever. I believe, for once, I got good advice.

If you can find it, Appatung is the best wood I've ever seen. It's from malaysia or something. A guy I know had Appatung on his gooseneck trailer. The trailer was 20 some years old, and the wood was only discolored. Might be expensive though. Doug N

Use white oak, if you have that for outdoor projects. My dad put a white oak floor on a flat bed trailer as a kid, and it still looks good some 50 odd years later. Greg

All the horse farms here in Kentucky use nothing but oak.

I have built fences on several horse farms here in old Ky using treated poplar. Oak is much better.
