I have been having a problem with my 1992 Chevy w/6.5 turbo. Sometime when taking off from a parked postion (manual trans) it just dies. When I try to crank it back it will not start. It has done this about 10 times and usually about 10-15 minutes later it will start and act like a gasoline engine with an overloaded carb. Yesterday it did it and now it won't start at all. Not a diesel mechanic so any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.

For suggesting checking the fuel filter, and lift pump, and for air leaks.

BETTER CALL WALT!!!

I guess you guys haven' been around these units for too long, or you'd know about the failure rate of the lift pumps and pressure senders, but I'm SURE Walt will clear that up for you!

Is your '92 electronic? I had a '94 and it was the pump driver. The pump driver is the little black electrical box on the side of the injector pump. I could be driving down the road and the thing would just shut off like you turned the key off. I have no idea what price would be, mine was covered on warranty.

It also could be your transfer pump, an electric pump along the frame rail. They are also common for going bad. I put 5 of them in within about 4 years at $163 and change. Doug N

1994 was the first year for the electronic "DS-4" IP's.

Something is starving it for air. We have a Ford van with a power stroke that did something very similar and it was a problem with the egr valve staying open and routing exhaust to the intake when it shouldn't. It was gagging on its own exhaust. I don't know if Chevys of that vintage had anything similar on them but if they did and it malfunctioned it would have similar results. EGR valves on diesels are intended to divert some exhaust to the intake at idle to displace some oxygen to reduce NOX emissions. If it jams wide open there isn't enough O2 for the engine to run. Those egr valves are a nusance.

An easy check if it is your lift pump is when you turn your key on to let your glow plugs work you should "hear" your lift pump activate for a few seconds. ssdieselsupply.com is a great site to go to. Walt specialised in 6.2 and 6.5

Sounds like a bad electric lift pump (located in the LH frame rail, more or less beneath your right foot) or the oil pressure switch that controls it.

A clogged fuel filter or leaks in one of the fuel lines, allowing air to enter after shutdown, could be other causes.
