Bought the truck but have not used it yet. Air blows cold--which is rare for an 86 model. I was looking under the hood and see comp still says R12. What I was looking for was sight glass. None on receiver and not a low or high side place to hook up a gauge set anywhere. Don't need to now---but where do you access the system??? Under the dash??? Thanks LB

I had an 86 F-250 6.9. The low side connection is on the receiver/accumulator on the RHS (passenger side) of the engine by the blower motor. The high side will be nearby on the high side line from the condenser to the receiver accumulator or at the discharge of the compressor. The fittings for the high and low side are different sizes. You may need an adapter for the high side fitting as it is smaller than the low side fitting.

Do not overfill the system and run with high discharge pressure. This will shorten the life of the compressor.

I generally kept mine at about a 35 to 40F saturation temp on the low side.

Periodically, you may want to remove the blower motor and clean out the evaporator box. Mine would also accumulate trash and debris and block airflow.

There should be an access valve somewhere near a fender. It will be on the suction side (or cold side) It will have a black plastic cap on it. 12 systems are a thing of the past so as long as it cools good leave it alone. If it needs recharging go to an auto parts store and by a changeover kit. it will have the proper size hose connector. It should also have a metal and rubber leak sealer. Follow the directi0ons. There is now mystery aboout changing from 12 to 134a except the Auto AC people like the 500 dollars you pay for a 50 dollar job. I have done dozens of chang over with no prob;ems.

there has got to be service connections under the hood. I had a 85 1/2ton ford and I do remember seeing them but I can't recall just where they are at. I'm not real keen on Ford products but I might try a powerstroke?
