Want to buy a Tahoe with 4.8 liter. Have never had one ,always had 5.7 liter which in my opinion is indestructiible. So what can you guys tell me about the 4.8 for reliabilty and will it get better mileage because it is smaller.

ohio B.S artists, Sounds like you are demeaning everyone that had a comment. Wound tight engines to get power does not sound right.

You went though all your comments and you recommend Chrysler , I did not know Chrysler made a truck. Dodge does.

i will say, however, that the 4.0 ford is excellent on fuel. highway milage of 24 for an extended cab truck (i'm using that term loosly, of course) is quite impressive.

not every one that had a comment. i was only refering to posts like "i have a brand x vehicle that, although it's not comparable in any way shape or form, would pull the rhetorical @$$-o- out of the world" that would be like me saying that my 68 slant six, because of it's low end, would be better than the 4.8 for towing. well, not so much.
but if you would like to have a discussion about how your little ford v6 ( my dad has the same engine in his f150) can compare with a v8 of around 288ci, that breathes better and has more peak torque, fine. all of dodges current power plants, with the exception of the cummins and the calibers l4 (developed in partnership with several international firms) have come from the auburn hills (chrysler) development and technology centers. and, since walter p. schemed an elaborate merger/takeover of dodge brothers in 1928, all dodge products ARE chrysler products. like a 4.8l chevy v8 is a gm product.

nothing like a post about generic motors to draw out the b.s. artists. seriously, the 4.8, 5.3, and the 6.0 are better engines than gm has made since 1970. mpg will depend on the weight of your right foot.
never driven a 4.8, but have driven the 5.3, and it'll wind tight. the 6.0 is long legged and sluggish like the 3.48" stroke smallblocks, and i guarantee that no current production truck v8, ford or chevy, in a comparible vehicle with similar gear :'s, will hold it's own with the 5.7 chrysler. with a trailer in tow, the 8.1 would, but at about 6mpg, for about 150,000 miles. thats about 60 grand worth of gas! if you can get 20 mpg (about what the ones with the d.o.d. 5.3's get) out of that tahoe, and drive 150,000 miles, you'll only spend about $18,000.

That 4.8 is a higher reving engine than the 5.3 ltr. The 5.3 isn't much better, it developes peak torque at 4200rpm. The 4.8 Peak torque at 4800rpm sounds more like a race engine then a truck engine. High rpm torque curves does not translate into great fuel mileage. Drag racing is one thing, real world torque pulling something from a dead stop is something else. The factory stickers should give you an indication of what to expect for gas mileage. (both should be similar) My little 4.0 Ford has but 60% the hp as the 4.8 but it developes peak torque at half that rpm so can pull a trailer just as well, as it is allways in it power/torque band. Many manufacturers are getting into a HP war and the real truck pulling power is getting lost. I think the new 300hp high rpm engines are not what you may have experienced with your older 5.7 liter.

I find the little one uses more fiel than the 5.7 but when you see how it performs it does'nt matter .

That little chev is a monster performer , I'm a dealer of used vehicles and i bought a 2002 tahoe and i've kept it for my wife (ex police ) and it is awesome , I've got a 5.7 350 in my truck and my buddy has a hemi in his truck and the tahoe is the quickest by far ,One night i got a couple of kids in a hemi wanting to drag off the lights and this old 190'000 km tahoe wasted it , Maybe ex-cop is set differently but this is the only little chev i've kept for my-self and i'm very impressed.

I've got a Silverado 4X4 with 4.8 / automatic ..Got lots of scat out on the road..Not much for trailering..I still get 17-19 mpg empty..Best I ever got out of my Ram was 11 mpg with a tail wind.. My only complaint with the Silverado is crappy chrome on the rear bumper..Started rusting after 4 months..

Not a direct answer to your question, but-we just bought an '02 trailblazer with the 4.2 straight 6. We also looked at an '01 suburban with the 5.7, thought we would be getting better than 13-15 that the suburban was said to get, but it only gets 15 mpg. Not sure why, but size of engine in an SUV does not make much difference. Greg

NO such thing as a 5.7 engine in a 2001 Suburban.

5.3, 6.0, and 8.1 were available.
