Is a great running, lower hour used, (approximately 1948 vintage) Hercules IXB5 3-1/4 x 4 gas engine and US Electric Plant Generator 120/240 78/156 worth anything? I'm not invovled with antique tractors and not sure if this engine would fit in a tractor or should it be just salvaged. Thanks for any suggestions!

Don't be in a rush to scrap either the engine or the generator, if that's what you mean by salvage. One of my parts catalogs lists Herc IXB with variations-2, -3, -5 and -5M, and it was used (mainly as IXB, IXB-3 and IXB-5, from what I find) in some smaller tractors and other equipment, enough so that you shouldn't have any trouble finding buyers. I can send a partial list, if you like.I think John S said that the number referred to the front end gearing, for timing and/or assessory drives; John, please correct that if it's wrong or incomplete. Does some rotation differ, like the Cont's?
The generator's out of my field, but there are generator forums that'll advise you if no one here can.

A list of potential buyers would be great, if you have the time, noncompos! What do you think of selling this on ebay and/or the classifieds on this page?

Thanks for the info and suggestions!
Mark

Boy if you live out in the country that would be great to use for emergency power. I would have the Generator checked out and repaired if needed and then use it.
