Stupid question

I see online that the new square balers you cannot run with less then 40hp (according to the website) Yet I saw the other day, a guy had an old Farmall A pulling a Small NH square baler. How many horses does it really take to run these balers? I've also heard of people running them off of Farmall Hs.

Maybe they do that as a quick way to weed out people from thinking they can run them with a compact tractor?

As I understand it, the PTO / Transmission on the Compacts can't handle the action of the square baler's plunger.

Just speculation, not sure what the highest HP "compact" is.

They don't take much HP, but I can't imagine a Farmall Super A running a PTO baler- are you sure it wasn't just pulling an engine baler?

Super A will run a PTO baler. I haven't used a Super A, but have seen folks do it. I have baled a couple times with a 140. Have baled lots of hay with a Super C and 230. They are all about the same HP.

Run a NH 268 Hayliner with a JD B and a Farmall 200. Usually pulling a wagon behind, load to about 100 bales. Can do if you"re careful, take your time, and don"t overload things. Don"t even have live PTO!

Small square balers don't take a lot of power to bale if you're just dropping them in the field. If you're pulling a heavily loaded wagon up and down rolling hayfields then you will need more power and most importantly more weight so the tractor stays in charge of the impliments.

i think it would depend a lot on the baler some are double feed and you drive right over the center of the windrows these big balers need a lot of power and a high tractor to operate them. if you get one of the older side pickup models then you can get by with a smaller tractor. My 68 NH "78" needs a bigger tractor to keep it going.

The size of the windrow has a lot to do with HP
