Hello I want to get an old mobile home for a project. I found one the only problem is getting it home. I have an ford EXURSION but I don’t know if that will pull it. It about 8 miles from my house and there’s lots of hills. I thought about taken my farmall m but I doubt that will pull it too. Any suggestions would be great.

James

I have moved Several 14+70 Trailers[ Moble homes] with our 2090 CASE,[1000 LBS WEIGHT ONE THE FRONT,STILL WAS NOT ENOUGHT ] The first one had sat there a long time, had to pull it up and over a Cement pad, blue out one tire ,bent the rim one one other one, went flat /all so bent the first axal some. the movers replaced the tires and away they went /40 miles. Another one I move had Texture 1-11 siding on it, and some snow on the roof, the weight was estomated to be over 16 TON / the man that first tryed to move it Broke the Draw Bar off his 4366 IH /had to get the one off his 1566, just luck it didn't break that to/ these people should have hire a Dozer for the off road and a heck of a good truck for the over road trip, [the one they hired was doing WHEELY'S HAD TO HITCH MY POWER WAGON TO IT TO KEEP IT DOWN ON THE LAST HILL,I will not Hitch to them any more ! INSURANCE = WHEN YOU ARE ON THE ROAD YOU DONT HAVE ANY WHEN YOU ARE HITCHED TO A TRACTOR. SAVE YOUR LIFE OR SOME ONE ELSES,PAYING A TRUCKER TO MOVE IT WILL BE YOU CHEEPEST LAWYER YOU WILL EVER HIRE !!!!

Just to make you think before you die. No way in heck should you try this with a M. We busted a draw bar on a 1486 and bent one on a 4020. If all is well, these tractors should work, but when a trailer house gets in time with the bumps in a HWY it is to much for the drawbar. We always move them with all household stuff in place.

I think by the time you drop the trailer behind your M and get to the roadway you will understand real fast what negative messages here advise.

Seems a farmer thinks his tractor is a little more than it truley is. You will need a 2 5/16 ball, and your M will probably need a litle torch work to make the hole larger. A AC 190 also needs to have the hole inlarged as a general rule. A 1486 probably will fit. If you chose a M (or any tractor for that matter) make sure that the nut on the ball is tight. Many balls have been used on thicker drawbars and the threads are stripped. If so washer it up as the shaft will snap if it does not draw down tight.

The jacks are usualy welded or bolted stable and do not go up real high, so your tractor drawbar best not bend down to much. This is not important on a road, but once you get in a yard and it is a little soft you get in trouble fast.

Dual wheels add to the stability, but limit you on turns, as the trailers have little tounge length. A 806 to 1486 will best be fitted with front end weights if any extreem hills are involved. Like said elsewhere hills take on alot of different profiles.

I would use the M. The transmission/engine will not move much, and work better then any brake. I would go in 4th TOPS and be real careful and have an escort car.

With hills? I wouldn't take a chance. What good is an escort car? To call an ambulance in case something happens? It's not like they could miraculously jump out of the car and do anything at the sign of trouble. A professional mover would probably have 1 or 2 pilot cars just to warn other traffic. Dave

I would stop and think what your life is worth. Getting a mover with a toter to pull this would be a lot cheaper than a funeral. I had a double wide moved 11 years ago. The guy tore it down, moved it 60 miles, drilled the pads for the blocks to support it, set the home back up, hook all the gas, water, electricity up, ready to go,
$5000.00. I would bet if the home if ready to hook and pull, you could get it done for less than $300.00. A phone call to ask would be cheap.

"there’s lots of hills"

That M may move it, but you better think about how you are going to stop it.

I have moved three with a 7610 Ford with no problems. One of them is a 14 X 70. Beware though, if they are that big or even close they are a hell of a load. I would not try it with your truck. If the front end of the M will stay on the ground it will move it.

A customer of mine was killed pull'n a 10X40, may have been a 12X50 not sure. He was only going 30 MPH are so and it got away from him going down a hill. When it left the road and down the embankment the tailer went threw the rear window and crushed'em. He laid up for 6 mo. are so and passed away from the injuries. I have pulled'em to the highway but that's it for me, let the big boys move'em the rest of the way.

Hey Larry806, that is a nice white 4-150 you have there, even with that tractor i bet it was a load. Unless it is a very small mobile home there is no way you are going to move one with a suburban, we had a 12X75 hauled in years ago by a custom mover and then hooked our MM 707 on to get in place, that thing was hitch heavy!

Seen several house trailers moved with a Farmall M. That was when the M was a big tractor and house trailers were 8 feet wide. My son in-law has moved a couple 14 wides with his John Deere 4020 in recent years. One mans hill is another mans mountain. Do not know what you call a hill. The trailers have brakes and would be hooked up to stop the trailer if a trailer rig would move it down a big hill. Not hooking them up would be liken to driving your car without any brakes.
Any one that needs to ask how and what to use to move something like that does not need to move it anyway.

About 30 years ago I pulled a neighbors 12 by 60 trailer about 15 miles to a place he bought. I used my 856 IH and had a full rack of front weights.I had to pull one very steep hill.

When we got there I got stuck and he said I guess thats where we will leave it while I build my new house.

A neighbor tried this with a International, cannot remember the model but it was a big tractor. The mobile home pushed the tractor over the hill totally demolishing the tractor and the home. Not sure how he got off and out of the way, but cleanup was done with a bulldozer. The wreckage was strewn over 200 feet at the bottom of the hill. Had he stayed with it, he would have certainly went the way of the equipment. I would hire a professional with certifications and proper saftey equipment. just my humble opinion.

Go to any dealer and ask them they will put you in touch with someone who hauls them for living and has all the things that will be needed. It won't cost you too much for a short haul and no tear down or setup.
Walt PS spent many an hour working with a friend moving these things.

I remember my dad moving some for people with his IH 1468. It had a full set of weights in the front. It was still a lot of tongue weight though.

my two cents get a good single or tandem axle truck tractor with a diesel and you should have no problem anything gas would start to work hard climbing any hills and the truck tractor would give enough turning clearance good luck with your pulling Ryne

NO, please don't even try behind a pickup. SUV is even worse, as not as heavy sprung. Would likely be more like a half ton pickup. I have pulled a half dozen or so mobile homes over the years with farm tractors. About the 3rd one I pulled I nearly destroyed behind the 1066 IH. Axles on it were setting way to the back, so had way too much tongue weight. It was a 14x70, as have all the rest I have pulled. Anyhow, with the axles too far back, dropped off a culvert going thru two very tight county road corners. Hitch folded straight up on the front of the trailer when it dropped, was able to pull it up the pure dirt road another quarter mile or so to get it away from traffic then had to call a big wrecker to finish pulling. That was in Nebraska. I have pulled two in Illinois with my Ford 5000 diesel. It is barely enough. Advantage does go to the 5000 over the 1066 as you can see and hear what is going on behind you as the 1066 was a cab tractor. A pickup is even worse as to seeing and hearing. You will most certainly want someone in front and behind you with cell phones or CB at the minimum. By the way, I used to drive implement trucks including 18 wheelers and they are easier to corner than the mobile homes as you can see in the mirrors and you drive them every day.

What size is it?? BTDT and pulled them for a living at one time. Mobile homes even the old ones are heavy very heavy and even a big tractor on hill will have problems. Not so much as to being able to pull but BIG problems being able to hold it back as you go down a hill. Also that ford will not even begin to pull it unless its maybe a very old say 8X45 or so and then the M might but again down hill is the problem. Now if you know some one with a dump truck they could pull it easy or look around and find some one with a truck, ya it would cost you but thats better then you or some one else getting hurt. I my self have pulled in 4 on to my place and I used a tamden axle big rig that I own to do so. Don't try it with any thing less

Say it is a 12x60 those are the smaller ones you will need a tractor the size of a IHC 756 1800 Oliver 4020 John Deere.
Hook a 12x60 to a small tractor and you will be sitting with your head on the trailer hitch.
If ya got a small trailer maybe something else.
A 12x60 puts a lot of weight on the tractor tongue.
