Methinks if you're asking the question, you ought to get the pro's in to look after it.... I doubt there'd be too many if any questions asked. They know this stuff is out there along with old ammunition, grenades, bombs, and who knows what other explosives.
I don't think any "normal" acting person that asks to have some old TnT removed is going to be treated like a terrorist, but I could be wrong....

There is no decision to be made here. Call the folks that do this for a living. That's what you pay taxes for. Besides, the folks that do this are a little on the strange side anyway. They LOVE this stuff. You will make their day.

Any other choice is waaay to risky and the possible consequences totally unacceptable.

Definately err on the side of caution and call the experts, be it whatever department that runs the local bomb squad or simply a professional, licensed blaster. Either one will know how to properly dispose of the stuff in a safe manner. I do alot of work on a guys machines that does drilling and blasting work. Several years ago he was given alot of old dynomite and other explosives to dispose of. I was working at his yard the day they went out back, in a big field, and "disposed" of all of it. By the time they were done there was a hole in the ground nearly 10 feet deep and 15+ feet across. The first batch he blew had alot more power left than he had estimated so he cut back on the amount of material in the second batch. It still blew a blasting mat that weighs around 8,000 lbs nearly 15 feet in the air. In other words even a few sticks is nothing to play with. I've got a friend that works in a scrap yard that has a shredder. He said one of the worst things to ever go through it is a stick or two of dynomite. He said they tend to get lost in the cab of an old truck or whatever and when it goes through the shredder the concussion of the hammers sets it off just like the concussion of a blasting cap would. Needless to say he said it nearly always tends to do at least a little damage to the shredder and if you've ever seen how their made and what they have to stand up to, again you'd see that this stuff is extreemely dangerous. In the end, whatever you do, it's always better safe than dead.

We had to call the local bomb squad out to one of our farms when grandpa's old dynamite box was beginning to crystalize over. We figured if we hit it wrong, it'd go off, otherwise we'd have taken care of it ourselves. Better safe than sorry; and no questions were asked.

BE VERY CAREFUL if they are sweating that is nitro glycerin very unstable. They found a warehouse with alot of it not to far from me a few years ago closed everything for days moved people out and hauled it to a quarry and set it off. good luck

It has been more than 35 years since I handled any dynamite. But at that time, we just crumbled the leftovers with bare hands while walking in a plowed field. Getting each stick a good distance away from the others is desirable if you plan to move them at all. Move them one at a time. Calling for official disposal is a good idea for old stuff.

How much do you value your hands, arms, life?
Can you determine without a doubt that it is flares or dynomite?

An expert may be the best route

Best bet is to alert authorities, since leaking dyno is very unstable. Another option is what I had to do in the Green Beret training- found some leakers in an abandoned quarry, and VERY carefully took them to a nearby stream, crumbled up each stick by hand, underwater. Your options are a lot safer.

If they are not leaking and if you for some unknown reason just insist on picking them up??? At least use a long stick with a beefy eyelet screwed into the end. Make a loop/noose with some strong cord/light rope. Hold the pole at an angle to your body instead of inline. If held inline and it blows, you may get speared. I would look close incase they are old road flares. If there is any doubt calling the authorites is still better than fooling around with the stuff. The bomb squad guys will be grateful for some something real to do. They train & train & train for months, even years between actual calls where is something that might go bang.

Got a good rifle? Do you care about the old truck? How good of a shot are you? Stand 100 yards away, blow a hole through them. If they don't pop when you hit them they're probably safe to move to a burn pile.

You can burn them but if they're leaking now thats another story. I would choose the safest way, bomb squad has remote control robot.

I found an entire case in the grainery when I was young. There was another eight to ten sticks in the neighbors lease shack up on the hill.

If it is sweating then do not touch it call someone with experience in theese matters. If it is not sweating then burn it.

If you have any doubt at all call the professionals.

if they are sweating then don't touch them call the Sheriff that's what they get paid for.
If not sweating then cut then down the middle and burn them they burn real easy.
But if it were me i cal the local sheriff why take a chance.
Walt

PS what you see sweating out is the pure Nitro that stuff will go boom if you drop it a few ft. onto the ground. When i was in Okinawa they sold lttle round balls with nitro in them you gave them a toss and they went boom. One guy had a pocket full of them an someone hit his pocket. Yes he had to by a new pair of pants.

If (and only if) they have already been handled in the process of finding them, then they are safe enough to burn. Not near a building, and not on anything good, as they will make a bright redorange flame that is kinda like a fusee. But if they have not been handled, the danger still exists that they could be touch sensitive. KABOOM
Treat them very tenderly. Call the sherif or police no n emergency number. JimN

I would burn them up like other people said nitroglycerin is leaking out. I have seen that more then once. Just put them in a fire. I would not call anybody because they would make a big scene about and before you know it you will be on the news.

Three of 'em right? In light brown waxed paper?

Those are road flares and they go in the box behind the truck seat. Probably some flags there too.

The deal of them laying on a truck fender may support your flare idea Allan,BUT back when the law was passed that you had to have a license to buy Dynamite,A LOT and I mean a LOT of people bought it by the CASES so they would have it.Those people are now your Mid 70s,80s,and 90 year old people,so there is I believe still a lot of it still lying around out there,Maybe not in Neb.but in the east and south or anywhere there are wooded areas.

Well if your not worried about that old truck just pile some brush or a large amount of stuff that will burn close light it up and move back. As I said before with out a cap to make it blow it will not blow unless you drop it and jar it some how but its safe to burn.

My dad and grandpa used to use a lot of TNT building ditches for the county. Old stuff is very unstable and it is probably leaking nitro. Dad told me once a barn blew up beacuse the nitro leaked out of some old TNT into the dirt on the floor. It might be perfectly safe to burn it, but why take the chance. I had to call the bomb squad once when I found a WWII vintage gernade in a house with some old man's things. They took it without asking any questions.

If you where close I'd take them off your hands. Now then one and the best way if they are where you can burn them just light them up. YEP I said light them. If you do that they will not explode. Takes a cap to make them go bang and burning them will not make them explode. Now if your worried about them call the cops but be ready for them to ask all sorts of dumb questions and also be in your business off and on for the next couple years

Do not mess with them as what is leaking is NITRO , Call in expert help . Myself anymore i would not even mess with them and i have been trained in explosives but that was some 40 years ago . And the last that i have handled lets make big BOOMs is over 25 years ago. In my younger days i would have removed them one stick at a time and placed them way out in the open and poured diesel fuel on them and burned them. BUT NOT TODAY let someone else handel them.

A friend of mine had the same problem. He contacted the local sheriff"s office, and they sent out the "bomb squad" (sort of), and they removed it for him. He was a little concerned that they would want to question, or even arrest, him; but that was not the case. They were happy that they were able to take care of it, instead of it falling into the wrong hands.

Good luck,

sticks are sweating out the nitroglycerin. It's becoming unstable. If it were me, I'd burn them. With today's Homeland Security BS having a nose in everybody's rectum..... I'd just as soon not notify the authorities.

We found some dynamite leftover on the farm years ago and it was sweating, like yours. We built a small pile of kindling, put the dynamite in with it and set it ablaze. Of course we gave it a wide berth! but it burned right up and that was that.
