I have an old howard 4 foot rotovator
which I still use with my MF-135
I guess it was manufactured 1940~1950

There is a shifter lever on the gearbox with 2 positions neutral and engaged.

Do you know the purpose of this shifter ?
Thanks in advance

If you bought the rotovator with the tractor that may be a Howard step down transmission. On old fords and early furgesons the ground speed was to fast and the other transmissions slowed the pto speed along with the ground speed. rotovator so Howard built a step If it is a Howard it is only to be used for the rotovator. It is not a granny gear to be used for pulling.

Didn't the old Ford and Ferguson Tractors have to have the PTO running for the three point to raise?

Hi Joe

I have one just like yours; I don't understand why this gearbox has a neutral on it?
If you find out let me know too!

Thanks, Paul

I think that Sid has the answer.....

On the old Fords and Fergusons the PTO must turn
to lift the hydraulic. Probably they put the
gearbox in neutral in order to lift the rotovator
to avoid it to spin on a cement floor or to avoid it to dig in grass or in other storage places.

I never figured it.....my tractors are with live hydraulics.

Thanks Sid !
I may have learned something new today.
