I'm surprised no one has mentioned Homelite - lightweight and powerful. I have 2 of them (got a cheaper model at auction as a back-up but haven't needed it). Dual lines are a must....I also use triple edge line. I can cover a lot of ground in an hour.

1. Redmax
2. Shindiawa
3. Echo

Buy a good one and it will last a homeowner 20 years. I'm beginning to like RedMax more and more even though we have 30+ pieces of Shindiawa and they rarely give us problems. I second the watch out for the spark arrestor plugging--main issue usually.

Get the Honda. We got the largest one they make and never looked back. It doesn't accelerate as fast, but man does it have the torque. Incredible. We got it mainly for brush work and it filled the bill.

The 4 stroke is quiet enough that you can talk on a cell phone when it's idling. Plus if you have some non-mechanically inclined people using it, you'll appreciate not having to mix gas. I know too many people who have bought a nice Stihl only to have someone put in pure gas and lock it up.

Round up, a sprayer and a cheap Ryobi. Never had a pars problem with the Ryobi they must b generic cuzz I have picked up 10 Ryobi's and a few other brands all seam to inter change on most of the ware parts. All came from the dump all free. I have never brought but one new'n the rest came from folks that throw them away, thanks keep'em coming. A 2 cycle engine is as simple as it gits, I have built good trimmers out of used parts, no new parts used. If folks want to pay 2 or 300 for'em have at it, they are no better than a cheap'n.

The best trimmer by far is a Redmax. I have sold Echo, Redmax, Stihl, and by far the Redmax is the best trimmer I have ever used. I run a lawn mower shop and we work on a lot of trimmer, we work on a lot of Stihl products, Ryobi, Yardman, Poualn and such. I sell Dolamr and Shindaiwa trimers> I used to sell Redmax, and still use one for my own use at home, you will not regret it if you get a Redmax. Stihl used to be good, but are not half the trimmer they used to be, all the ones we work on are constantly having carb issues.

Best one I ever bought was an electric one for use around the yard. It's the best because my wife will use it!

Shindaiwa is a pretty good trimmer, but getting parts for one is quite a challenge to get parts for and they also have some carburation issues. I used to sell them and quit because of the issues with carburation and they do not start well when cold.

I have three Shindaiwas at my disposal. All were bought brand new. The oldest is 24 years old. I have never had to replace any part of any of my three Shindaiwas.

I'll second Shindiawa. I have 35-40 pieces of Shindiawa equipment, weedeaters, hedge trimmers, blowers, multi tools, power brooms and chainsaws. I've never had a problem getting parts, but a Shindiawa needing parts is a very rare occurance.

On the carb problems, most "carb" problems are due to the spark arrest screen in the muffler getting plugged or dirt getting in the fuel tank when refueling.

We use Optimol fuel mix and rarely have a carb problem. This equipment is used daily by multiple users.

I agree Shindaiwa. Especially if you want to do some heavier work like brush cutting. Dave

The are probably both good machines, My choice of machines is the Red Max. It will perform day after day with no problems. Stan

Stihl has a 4 cycle weed whacker ( FS 110 ) now. They were around a few years ago when I bought my FS 85 solid shaft. If you talk to a store that sells both they will tell you the high end stihl's have a solid shaft while the honda's still have a wire. I was told for lots of heavy abuse get the stihl due to the solid shaft. Honda makes a great product, it just depends what you wanna do with it.

I would also check out Dolmar. They make some great chainsaws and I am sure there weed whackers are not far beinhd.

Now in third year with Honda. It weights a bit more. Not quite as quick on accelration. I like the 4 stroke runs quiet and starts very easy.

I have one of the 31cc honda trimmers with a straight shaft. I'm sure the stihl trimmers are good but I couldn't imagine it would be any better than the honda. I have a 3 hole golf course on five acres in front of my house and know all about maintenance and reputable equipment. You won't be disappointed with the 4 stroke honda.
