I was curious if anyone remembers going to the 1957 worlds plowing match held in Peebles Oh? I guess 450,000 people attended. This was the first time it was ever held in the USA. The small town of Peebles is commemorating the matches on August 17,&18 with festivities. they also made a very nice DVD of the event.

Yes I attended this event. There were lots of people. Every near-by town that had any sleeping accommodations had a popukation explosion. It was a great event. IH had a big top tent setup for their show. First and only time I saw a tractor square dance with Farmall 230's. It was a much better show then the ones you see today. The only show where I have seen a Super 99 Oliver with a chrome grill.

Ron,There were two Super 99s chromed there,The gentlemen that owned the one made Oliver leave the chrome on and you can see it in the Oliver Collector display at the Ohio Farm Science Review each year.Where the other went is ????but the chrome was taken off it.Peebles was nowhere,no roads to it other then 41 which looked like maybe a snake (CROOKED)made it,It was on the old ZANE TRAIL which ran from Wheeling WV.to Maysville KY.,Very rich in history.

Okay. Thanks for the tip about the 99 at the Farm Science Review. I'll have to look it up in September. I was raised in near Portsmouth and I'm well familar with Peebles. I was in high school in 57 and I played hooky every day to go the show.

I was in my 2nd year of high school and it seems to me that our school allowed the FFA off from school for one day to attend. The plowman that represented the USA was from our county (Mercer) here in Ohio which is north of Dayton approx. 50 miles.
As I recall the plowmen from Europe complained that the soil was way to dry from their viewpoint to do a good job of plowing. As many of you know their plows are a good bit different (long curved moldboards) then those here in the states and their soils are usually much wetter when they plow.
I would also be intrested in a DVD.

Thats right Peebles could not accomodate 450,000 people. Int harvester constructed a 3000 foot run way for people to fly in. IH had their own D.C. 3 plane they would stay in Cincinnati and fly to the matches. The population of Peebles was 1800 nearly every home had guests staying in them or camping in yards, large traffic jams were constant. The DVD is very good, for more information contact Mary Fulton 937-587-2043. For those who don't know where Peebles is its about 65 miles east of Cincy.

I don't remember going to the plowing matches since I was in the 2nd grade but my Dad spent all day there, every day that the show was in progress. In fact some of the pictures that he took have been incorporated into the DVD, which I have a copy of. And yes, there were 450,000 + - people that attended. According to the DVD lots of them were put up in area homes but some stayed in hotels as far away as Columbus and Cincinnati. There is going to be a banquet on Friday night 8/17 in Peebles but I think tickets are already sold out for that. Also on Saturday 8/18 at the Peebles High School will be displays, demonstrations, and some tractors of the era including my '49 Farmall H. The phone number I have for more information is (937) 587-2043

How the heck did they get 450,000 in Peebles?!? Are you sure you did'nt add some extra Zero's? There's no way they could handle that many people, I don't think 4,500 lived in the county at the time. I have an aunt in Hillsboro and a cousin in Seaman not too far from there.

John,I can't agree or disagree with those numbers(seems a little high)but If you weren't there you couldn't believe it.The FARM PROGRESS show in Il.& Iowa or the Ohio Farm Science Review pale in comparison to size or People that were there. We had to stay over 70 Mile away.

Remember going in Waseca, MN in I believe 1965 or 66. "Plowville" was renamed "Mudville" because of all the rain. Our high school band took the stage one of the days, and Jim Nabors (Gomer Pyle) was the guest celebrity.
