Few weeks back I bought a Farmall 504 Diesel, posted about it on here, some of You might remember the posts. Tractor runs good, bushhoged a few acres, mechanicaly seems to be in good shape. Electricly, Well thats another story. Took a few days to get all the manuels I can find, first thing I see is the serial number is wrong to have an alternator, this one does. Wirein' appears to be a mess. Not a gauge works, glow plugs don't work, some gauges are broken.Checked this site for parts, no wirein' harnesses, not much in the way of gauges. If I wanted to put the tractor back original, is there any where to find the original gauges and wirein'.Would You change back to a generator or keep the alternator? This is a 64 model, serial number just under 10,000. I can replace the gagues with others that will work, with the wirein' diagrams I have I can rewire the tractor runnin' the wires thru the plastic conduit parts houses sell, bein' original is not a must, I mainly want as good a runnin' and as strong a tractor as I can make this one. Where will I find glow plugs? Also the sheet metal peice goin' under the dash? Only missin' the one peice of sheet metal. I think I got a good one to go to school on.

My dad had a 504 gas a few years back. Their isn't really a lot of electrical stuff on this tractor, Starter, Ignition(glow plugs for diesel), lights, generator not much more. If you have a one wire alternator it gets even simpler. And the alternator will charge the batteries much better than a generator.

Not sure of your knowledge in this area but it's not very difficult to build a wireing harness. You might want to purchase a few different color wires when you build it for easer trouble shooting later.

I bought a Farmall 504 Diesel a year ago. The desciption of the electrical problems you are having sounds exactly like mine. I found the electrical diagram for a 560 diesel on this site and used it as a guide. The main difference is 6 glow plugs instead of 4. Do a search in the archives for a 560 wiring diagram and look for the diagram for converting to an alternator. Mine also had a screwed up alternator conversion but once I got the wires traced out it was easy to fix. The main problem I am having this year with it is that the 40 plus year old hydraulic hoses a going out.

Aloha, I would stay with the alternator and make a list of what gauges, lights, etc. that needs to be hooked up. After you have all those listed, then make a schematic drawing for the wiring. Ok, if the alternator is charging ok, then leave the wiring alone or change it if it doesn't look too good (cracking insulation etc.) and use mechanical gauges for your water temperature and oil pressure. Just take one item at a time and everything should come out ok.

Original style guages will cost about 3 to 4 times more than a generic guage which will work just as good. Get a good wiring diagram and make your own harness.

Leave the alternator on it, you should still be able to get glow plugs from a Case IH dealer.
