Bought a 2005 Ford Escape with 55K one owner miles on it this weekend. Think the owner used MotorCraft 5w20 oil as per the book. Vehicle has no leaks, or oil consumption problems. Would this be a good candidate for changing to synthetic oil? If so what brands are good. not interested in Amsoil, as there is no sales outlet here. What have you people have good service from. I have always run diesel oil in all my engines both gas and diesel for the detergent factor and now it may be necessary for the fact that they are removing some of the anti-wear additives from the gasoline oils. Do I need to stay with the book reccomended viscosity here in the state of Georgia where we seldom have many days below 20 degrees except for a day or so at the time? Can I run a diesel grade oil in this engine if I could find a synthetic diesel blend to have the extra detergent and wear packages or is this too much of a good thing?? Aren"t some of the synthetic blends part mineral and part synthetic stock? Is it wise to use the extended change intervals claimed by some synthetic oils? Never dealt with synthetic motor oil before. My 50+ years of experience have all been with mineral base oils. Thanks for your help and comments. Gene Davis

Thanks to all for the comments. It is the 3.0 engine an Escape, not an Explorer. Gene

You should stick with 5w-20 in that engine. ford went to the 5w-20 because the tolerances are so fine, you can actually starve parts of the engine for oil if you use an oil with a bigger molecule such as 10wx30. The engine just can't pump it thru those close tolerances. Motorcraft 5wx20 is a semi-syn oil. It will give you many miles of service, just keep it changed every 3000 miles.

Never knew Ford had a 3.6L, sure its not a 4.6?

First thing, the only reason Ford went to 5W20 was to improve fuel mileage for federal fleet fuel mileage requirements. While it might have gained Ford .5 or .75 miles per gallon for their entire car line up, you won't gain anything that you'll notice. The engine was designed (if its a 4.6) 17 years ago to use 5W30 or 10W30 and that hasn't changed.

In Georgia in the summer I'd definately use 10W30 in convential oil (switch back to 5W30 in the winter) or stick with 5W30 synthetic. If you are going to change the oil every 3000 miles I'd stick with conventional. If you want to change the oil at 6000 to 7000 miles switch to Mobile 1 and buy a decent filter.

A 4.6 Escape would be a pretty spunky little rig. I think a 3.6 would sound alot more realistic for that kind of vehicle.

I run 5W-20 in my F-150 with a 5.4, runs great. When they actually measure it 5w-20 is only a couple points different than 5W-30, not enough to really worry about. Motorcraft stuff is of pretty high quality and is pretty cheap. A Motorcraft FL-820S filter for my 5.4 is less than $3.50 and Motorcraft Synthetic Blend oil is $.20 more per quart than the rebottled Valvoline dino oil I had been getting at Napa. All of this is available at about any Wally World, so you don't have to pay whatever the dealer will try to stick you for it either.

I missed the "Escape" I thought he was talking Explorer.

The Escape comes with only the 3.0 Duratech engine. Same story though with the oil weights. The engine first hit the streets in 1995 (in the Taurus) with 5W30 the recommended oil. The engine has remained nearly unchanged since (great engine when introduced - so so 12 years later by todays competition).

I would never put anything thicker then 30 weight in it. While designed for 30W these engines have been remarkably stable and have rarely become oil burners except under extreme neglect or abuse. Usually the car around them will fall apart before the engine wears out.

It is so hot here in Mississippi, that I would run at least 20W50 or 30wt. Also, these new small cars have little radiators that will cause your engine to self destruct if they get corroded. I would drain all the coolant out and put in 100% undiluted antifreeze if it were my car.

Why do you want to abuse an engine with 100% antifreeze? That's not nearly as good a coolant as 50/50. Though these days you have to very careful that the stuff you buy isn't already premixed at 50/50. Good water is important, ditch water isn't good and a lot of well water isn't all that good for an engine with aluminum heads and an aluminum radiator. Jugs of distilled water are cheap and clean.

Delta Bob, the close tolerances in that engine will not allow it to lube properly with that heavy of an oil - damage will result. Using 100 percent antifreeze in any car is a bad idea - it will not cool as well as a mixture. It will cool better with about 30 percent distilled water. Tom

Castrol Syntec synthetic oil is about the best you can buy. Be carefull on jumping around with oil weights, these newer engines have very close tolerances and don't care for heavy oils. I own a Pontiac Vibe GT with a factory supercharger in it. I run castrol syntec 5w30 and when I switched to it my gas milage increased by 2 miles a gallon. I think synthetic oil is the way to go.

I have a 1999 F150 with a V6 in it and i have always used Quaker State 10W30 in it. It has 168,000 miles on it and does not use any oil between changes at 3,000 to 4,000 mile. I haul some pretty heavy loads with it at times and have never had a problem. My money is on QS oil.
